Generative Genres: Grindcore

As Jordan Volz's "Tracking the Trends" articles uncover musical trends in specific regions of the world, Generative Genres focuses more on the essence of truly visionary genres. This article is the first chapter of a four part series featuring bands who are just stepping into the limelight of their particular genre. Also to be noted about my articles, they will be showcasing more metal-oriented bands rather than spacey post rock bands like my friend Jordan loves to write about. So, open your browser and get the horns ready, you're about to be informed on the generative genre of grindcore.

Stand Before the Firing Squad
Valencia, California

Listen: Myspace (http://www.myspace.com/standbeforethefiringsquad)
Website: Hand of Hope Records (http://www.handofhoperecords.com/)

It seemed like any other drugged out fiesta: heroin and tacos. We've all been there before, but this one was different, this one...it was the beginning of Stand Before the Firing Squad. While some lay passed out, five men made eye contact that day and changed each other's lives forever. There was much cuddling along with discussion. It was discovered that four of the five played instruments, 2 geeeturs, 1 bass (non-fish) and bongos. The bongos were later converted to drums. The last man played no instruments, had no rhythm and was possibly a chimpanzee. This made him prime material for lead vocals. After a hardy mud wrestling match a name was chosen for the band. Stand Before the Firing Squad, the genesis story.

See You Next Tuesday
Bay City, Michigan
http://www.decoymusic.com/images/trackingthetrends/SeeyounextTuesday.jpg
Listen: Myspace (http://www.myspace.com/seeyounexttuesday)
Website: See You Next Tuesday (http://www.seeyount.com/)

See You Next Tuesday has an affiliation with the grind-whore Cunning Linguist Industrial Technologies, (otherwise known as C.L.I.T.), and it's easy to see why. This band takes the phrase "hyprbrütality" to a new level with their extremely abstruse vocals and hi-tech pulses of jangling grooves. Just recently down-sized from a 5-piece band to a 4-piece band, See You Next Tuesday shows no signs of slowing down. Their 3-song self-titled EP is out now and can be ordered from both their myspace and C.L.I.T.'s myspace page as well.

Dead Will Rise
Central Ohio
http://www.decoymusic.com/images/trackingthetrends/DeadwillRise.jpg
Listen: Myspace (http://www.myspace.com/deadwillrise)
Website: Dead Will Rise (http://www.deadwillrise.com/)

In September, Jordan wrote the article "Tracking the Trends: Ohio Alternatives" to present Decoy readers with amazing bands from that region. I'm here today to present one more band from that area of the country that deserves a mention: Dead Will Rise. These technical grindcore prodigies have offered us Rest Assured the End is Upon Us, the most promising debut Extended Play since Into the Moat's Means by Which the End is Justified. These boy-wonders use the release's 5 tracks to brandish their compelling capabilities of descending into mammoth breakdowns only to surge back up into dexterous and perforating improv segments. Keep an eye out for these grinders because they're only going to get better.

Cloacal Kiss
Raleigh, North Carolina
http://www.decoymusic.com/images/trackingthetrends/CloacalKiss.jpg
Listen: Myspace (http://www.myspace.com/cloacalkiss)
Website: Cloacal Kiss (http://www.cloacalkiss.com/)

"Four men...one machine...bathing in the sweet grease of your rot." The band's short but effective description of their 4-man, 1 drum machine (known to the band as Programus) vortexing grind project. Clocal Kiss was created by the members of the now deceased grindcore band The Sawtooth Grin and the band couldn't be more assiduous on reperforming the blistering spectacle that earned The Sawtooth Grin's popularity. The paroxysm of earsplitting shrieks and clambering guitars remains the apex of the band's inherited abilities, but newfangled sense of perversion separates Cloacal Kiss (which is defined as a sexual act between two birds) from being a mirror image of their former selves.

Crowpath
Southern Sweden
http://www.decoymusic.com/images/trackingthetrends/Crowpath.jpg
Listen:Willowtip (http://www.willowtip.com/store/product_detail.aspx?id=505)
Website:Crowpath (http://www.crowpath.com/)

With 2 full-lengths distributed by Willowtip, including their newly available album Son of Sulphur, and several vinyl releases under their belt, Crowpath has emerged as a formidable powerhouse in the modern grindcore scene. Their previous release, Red on Chrome, was as distorted as a bumper-car rally under the illumination of a hundred bursting strobe lights. Son of Sulphur, however, sees an impelling amalgam of gargantuan baneful breakdowns and grind-oriented havoc that brings to mind the unique works of Mare and The Secret. Crowpath has developed an inconceivable hybrid of two contrasting genres with their latest album and it's foolish to think they'll stop there, as these Swedish grindcore pioneers have just begun their cauterizing career.

Grindcore is such a hit or miss genre for me. I can totally get into some bands but others I can't stomach a minute of. I'll no doubt give these bands a listen when I get to a computer that has speakers (I'm at my parents' place this evening), but I'm not sure I'll dig much. I'm more interested to see what other metal-ish genres you tackle. I'd love to see an article on tech metal.

stand before the firing squad are from my hometown and I cant believe that anyone is excited about them. Its a bunch of bad noise (even though I normally like the genre).

oh and their description above is taken directly from their myspace page, last time I checked, that isnt called writing an article... i think its called plagerism

okay, to explain why i used their bio from their myspace page is because i thought the humor would be appreciated here. besides, i am actually planning on writing a review on these guy's ep since i was introduced to them on this page, i feel it is appropiate.

thats cool man, I didnt mean to come across as such a dick. I was just trying to point out really that their myspace had that info and to cite it or something. I didn't mean to insult anyone on staff

keep in mind that it IS finals week right now and writing up an article for a non-paying music site that doesn't get a lot of hits in comparison to many sites that i consider to be beneath us is not exactly more important than studying for tests that will impact the rest of your life.

i, on the other hand, have no excuse for not churning out reviews like crazy, except that all the ones i try to write lately turn out to be terrible.

in conclusion: when finals are over, this won't be a problem.

please list the sites that are "beneath" us for my own personal pleasure.

pretty much all of them. most tend to dabble too exclusively within one genre or another. obviously, absolutepunk deserves a mention here. the prp has definitely faded tremendously over the years. i've never been a fan of pitchfork, but most would say we aren't up to their caliber. personally, i don't care for their wishy-washy reviews that are more caught up in the research they do into band names and out-of-context lyric bashing than with the music itself. pretty much all of them, really.

except me. i don't even research things and make wild, random guesses and hope i don't get called on it.

it's alright, you're probably new to most of this stuff.. go look around at some articles here and on other music sites, and then go look at the band's "official" biography.. you may find what you've stumbled across here.. it's called lazy journalism and trust me, we all suffer from it at one time or another.

im actually not new to this stuff at all. I know what youre saying though. I see it a lot. I just happened to be in a shitty mood earlier and decided to lash out.

Finals are a pain in my ass. That, and two Explosions in the Sky concerts during finals. It's just too much to be writing any articles these days, i agree.

Concerning plagerism, a lot of webzines use similar "lazy" journalism tactics. Everything I ever write is original from myself, which is why you don't see me writing much during finals.

i think the other 3 parts will include:

technical metalcore
doom/sludgecore
european post-hardcore

what bands would you consider european post hardcore?

gregplaysdrums
12-14-2005, 02:53 AM
main ones being unfold, vancouver, impure wilhelmina, and a few others..

why?

just curious. I haven't heard that term used before. I guess I just dont really listen to many european bands, besides Jairus.
I'll make sure to check that article out when its posted

I could say the same about US bands--Texas excluded.
