HOT
A Wilhelm Scream (http://www.awilhelmscream.com) - Following up their debut top 5 of the year album Mute Print last year they have managed to follow it up with an equally impressive sophmore effort that will leave your ears wanting more which should be good for them as we anticipate them to land some pretty big tours for the remainder of this year. It wont be long before everyone, including your neighbor, is singing their songs.
Nightmare of You (http://www.myspace.com/nightmareofyou)- Sure their former bands were great (Movielife, Rival Schools), but Nightmare of You is out to make you forget about their past. Their self titled debut, which drops September 13, is the most eclectic and diverse record I've heard this year. It runs the gammit from punk to new wave to alt country, all while never sounding forced or contrived. EastWest thought enough of them to give them their own imprint, and they'll give them the media and promotional blitz the likes of which the label has never seen. Movielife who?
Avenged Sevenfold (http://www.avengedsevenfold.com) - Although there were mixed reactions here to their newest album we can't deny that this band is hot right now. Turn on Fuse, hit up MTV2, their music video is climbing the charts on those countdowns. After a successful debut on the Billboard Charts and an impressive Summer on the Vans Warped Tour, their their dip into the mainstream looks to be long lasting.
Motion City Soundtrack (http://www.motioncitysoundtrack.com/news.php)- Things are really happening for this MN quintet. They just finished a mainstage stint on Warped, their upcoming UK tour was selling so well they had to move to bigger venues, they're about to make their network television debut on Conan, and their single "Everything is Alright" is going for radio adds this week. If that wasn't enough, they will make their MTV debut as the featured artist on MTV's "10 Spot Drop" this coming Tuesday, August 9. A little moog will take you a long way.
The Black Dahlia Murder (http://theblackdahliamurder.com/) - With all the hype surrounding the release of the new As I Lay Dying album, many allowed The Black Dahlia Murder's to fall off their radars. How foolish of us all. With the release of their sophmore album Miasma they have established themselves brilliantly at the forefront of the burgeoning US metal scene. After touring constantly over the past two years with the likes of Arch Enemy, Napalm Death, Terror, and The Red Chord have created a masterpiece proving they will play second fiddle to no one.
NOT
Day Of Contempt (http://www.dayofcontempt.com/) - Another image band that might have the image down but doesnt have the music to go with it. A extremely bland debut EP from the guys from Australia. We anticipate them to fall under the cracks as do most bands that do not sell well on Epitaph.
Blindside (http://www.blindsideonline.com) - Blindside has been building up alot of steam since the mid 90's with their brand of melodic (semi-christian) hardcore. Each album found them getting progressively more rock oriented. They seem to hit their pinnacle with their major label debut, 2002's Silence. Last year saw them release About A Burning Fire to very mixed reviews. People weren't crazy about the addition of the ballads, but it was still a very listenable album. The same can't be said about their latest offering The Great Depression. The album is so gritty and undeveloped, it barely resembles the same band. They have lost all sense of direction as well at times almost dipping into garage rock terrain. The edge is gone. Time to head back to Sweden and find yourselves again.
