View Full Version : Albums You May Have Missed (Instrumental/Post Rock Edition)

Considering the recently peaked interest in the instrumental and post-rock genres, we thought it would be a good idea to compile a list of 2006 releases that may have escaped your attention. Below is a list of five albums that were among last year’s best. Enjoy!
North - Siberia
http://www.decoymusic.com/images/missedalbums/north.jpg
Website (http://www.northband.net/) | Listen (http://www.myspace.com/northistaken)
Emerging from the desert city of Tucson, Arizona, North present a sound as encompassing as their album title suggests. Moments of beautifully layered guitars and intricate melodies give way to walls of distorted riffs and a heaviness comparable to contemporaries such as Isis and Pelican (who are the band’s most obvious influence). Siberia is one of the most promising debuts in recent years, and the release of their upcoming full length Ruins (May 1) will surely place them at the forefront of the genre.
Rating: 4/5
RIYL: Pelican, Isis, Tides
Lite - Filmlets
http://www.decoymusic.com/images/missedalbums/lite.jpg
Website (http://lite-web.com/) | Listen (http://www.myspace.com/liteband)
Lite is one of the many great bands coming out of the Japanese scene. Filmlets, the follow up to their 2005 self titled debut, finds the band refining their “mathy” instrumental sound. Guitarists Nobuyuki Takeda and Kozo Kusumoto employ a kind of call and response style, which only accents the bands affinity for complex time changes and mind-fucking riffs. Moments of musical calculus are often broken up by slower, jazzy passages which place more emphasis on the bass and percussion. The most impressive thing about Lite is their remarkable ability to match their technicality with melody and emotion—something that is seldom accomplished in the genre.
Rating: 3.5/5
RIYL: Don Caballero, The Mercury Program, Hella
Tenebre - In Everything Give Thanks
http://www.decoymusic.com/images/missedalbums/tenebre.jpg
Website (http://www.tenebremusic.com/) | Listen (http://www.myspace.com/tenebre)
San Francisco’s Tenebre bring something new to the genre with their brand of jazz-inspired post-rock. This trio showcases their impeccable musicianship and songwriting abilities on their debut full length In Everything Give Thanks. The rhythm section, which often takes precedence in the mix, is comprised of stand-up bassist Patrick Taylor and drummer Daniel Pearce. Together they create a technical, yet smooth background for guitarist Max Foreman, who mixes warm chord voicings with flawless two-handed tapping. The incorporation of unique time changes and string arrangements completes the band’s distinct sound.
Rating: 4/5
RIYL: Owls, Grace Cathedral Park, 33.3
The Ascent of Everest - How Lonely Sits the City
http://www.decoymusic.com/images/missedalbums/ascent.jpg
Website (http://www.ascentofeverest.com/) | Listen (http://www.myspace.com/theascentofeverest)
Paying tribute to those who came before them, this Nashville seven-piece capitalizes on the sound made popular by bands like Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Explosions In The Sky. Although not quite groundbreaking, How Lonely Sits the City should prove to be more accessible to post-rock newcomers, as the experimentalism of GY!BE and A Silver Mt. Zion might be considered an acquired taste. This debut consists of five compositions in which each musician is equally involved in creating beautiful soundscapes which ultimately transcend into heart-stopping crescendos. My only complaint about the record is that the band relies too heavily upon their influences. I hope they continue to mature and add more unique elements to their sound. Nonetheless, How Lonely Sits the City is a remarkable debut and a perfect soundtrack to catharsis.
Rating: 4.5/5
RIYL: Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Explosions in the Sky, A Silver Mt. Zion
Toe - New Sentimentality
http://www.decoymusic.com/images/missedalbums/toe.jpg
Website (http://www.toe.st/) | Listen (http://www.myspace.com/toemusic)
Toe, who arguably boast the genre’s most impressive drummer in Takashi Kashikura, have always strived to reinvent themselves with each release. Their latest EP, New Sentimentality, finds the band trading in their many effects pedals for acoustic guitars, synthesizers, xylophone, handclaps, and even *GASP* vocals. I know many fans of the genre cringe when they see the “V-Word,” but these softly-sung lyrics (both English and Japanese) only add to the melancholic beauty of the album’s closing track, which is aptly titled “Goodbye.” The band’s trademark sound is still there—complex, jazzy drumming coupled with intricately-woven guitar melodies and smooth basslines, but these new additions (especially the acoustic guitars) prove to be a step toward transcendence for these Tokyo natives.
PS – Be sure to check out Toe (featuring Toki Asako) on the Husking Bee Tribute Album!

Let's not get into another "my taste is better than yours" argument. Everyone's allowed to like whatever they want; if 12 stones makes you happy, go for it.
The Ascent of Everest is gorgeous and I find North to be quite enjoyable. Need to give the others a listen.

Have you taken a look at the news section? Read the reviews? Decoy covers QUITE a bit when it comes to music. Popular music to underground music. And just because it is popular doesn't mean it gets a bad review.

Dude, this is decoymusic.com. There is diversity on this site. People like a lot of different things. I'd say go to absolutepunk.net because there is no diversity there but you wouldn't like the music they talk about there either. If you are going to diss bands with actual talent here then you won't last too long. There isn't much discussion for radio friendly rock bands here. Sorry.
BozzCollin
04-07-2007, 12:48 PM
I like a lot of bands that aren't radio friendly, but i also like tons of bands that are. I like any kind of rock period pretty much. it just depends on what the vocals sound like for me. A kinda long while ago, I discovered Bullet For My Valentine, loved em. Then they got signed and hit the radio. It's like that a lot for me, I discover a band, then they get signed and become famous. Same with the band Faktion. I discovered them a few years ago, then they got signed, now they're not so great, but not absolutely horrible either. Hell, the only reason I signed up here was because I saw a Temptation Come My Way review. Didn't realize that nobody here really likes radio friendly bands. I saw The Showdown's review, MATSOD review, Chevelle, Shadows Fall, Haste The Day. What about Linkin Park, anyone have respect for them at least?

dude, its all fine and good that you like those bands, but this article is about instrumental/postrock bands. its great that you want to voice your opinion on the website, but dont say things like "i was maybe expecting them to have some kind of talent" -- thats just ridiculous. all of the musicians in these bands are incredibly talented and write great music. decoy covers all types of music, im sure there are plenty threads made for or about bands you enjoy. this article was intended for people who like this kind of music and might want to learn more about it and/or discover some new bands.
PLEASE for the love of holy fuck can we get back on topic?!

Popularity obviously doesn't make a band more talented. According to you, fall out boy is the worst now, yet they are also the most popular. There is no consistency in your argument.
Also, this is instrumental music. There is a ceiling as to how high the popularity of this genre can go. You will never here instrumental music on the radio, or at least not for a long time.
Chris Conlan

12 Stones are famous? Only thing they were popular for was the ones guys guest vocals on that Evanescence track. Lately, actually probably in the past 3-4 years, I've heard nothing of the band.

in the past 3-4 years they've been making a new record. "Stay" and "Photograph" were hits off "Potter's Field."

I never said being popular makes u better. Cloudscollide said that 12 Stones sucks, and I told him they're more famous than any of these bands. Therefore, they obviously don't suck. If they did, then they wouldn't be popular. Never said BEING POPULAR makes a band better, I said being popular means that more people like the band.

You're contradicting yourself. Saying "people like a band so they obviously don't suck" goes against your whole FOB and JT hatred.
And you also said that the bands in this article don't have talent, implying that 12 stones are better. You also said 12 Stones are more famous so they obviously don't suck. Putting the two together, gives us that you think that being popular makes a band better.
Look, I'm not trying to be antagonizing or anything. You can like 12 Stones, I don't care. Just quit arguing over popularity and talent.

I was giving my opinion on FOB & JT. Once again, I never said being famous makes a band better. Tons more people like 12 Stones than these bands. You completely dis on the majority of famous bands. Yea, FOB and JT have talent. I dont like em, but millions do. They have more fans than 12 Stones can dream of having, but i could care less cause i dont like either of them. My Top Four Albums of All-Time (because i'm too pretentious to have five...and the fourth one's not really #4)
1. Failure - Fantastic Planet
2. Mr. Bungle - California
3. Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band - Safe As Milk
4. Spacehog - The Chinese Album
Albums that got me into music:
Rammstein - Sehnsucht
Ben Folds Five - Whatever and Ever Amen
Deftones - Around the Fur
Silverchair - Frogstomp
Bloodhound Gang - One Fierce Beercoaster
I'm sure there are more, but that's pretty much it. The one that turned my tastes toward what it is today is probably For the Masses: A Tribute to Depeche Mode, which I bought only because it had Rammstein on it. Got me into Failure. I'd heard Deftones before that and dug it, but it didn't hurt that they were on it, also, along with Smashing Pumpkins and a bunch of other bands I've enjoyed on some level since then.

oh man, i forgot about sixteen stone. that album was so great back when i was in middle school.
i never got past the hit single on fuel, though. the rest of the album just didn't stack up. even as a runt, i loved me some strings.
also: we have a weekly article called the Listening Station where anyone who wants can send an email to me with a writeup about an album they listened to over the last week that they think people should check out. it's pretty all over the place with plenty of good stuff. and that one week where everyone picked a horrid nu-metal disc. that one was fun.

Two things for this thread:
1.Man Man is ridiculously awesome
2.The band that really got me into 'indie' music, or whatever you want to call it, was Emery. And although I know now that they aren't the greatest band in the world, out of all the generic screamo bands out there, they are in the upper echelon. But their generic-ness is justified by sentimental value.

Dang, this thing did go crazy, then comfy didn't it? I'm probably going to sound hella cliche, but the band that really got me into music in the way I am today - to really love and appreciate it - was Nirvana. I never looked back after that. Alice In Chains took second place... Dirt had a death-grip on me for while. I could easily go on.
For the Buzz dude - I just now caught up on this whole thread... it looks like you guys got just smoothed over, but let me say - I've kinda come into this site in a very backwards kinda way. I've learned a lot of different styles and bands since then too - there's not a lot of common ground with some of the fellas when you come from a mainly main-stream listening background, but give it time. I think your comment about "talent" got taken a bit personally (as talent is a horribly debatable quality) and then both sides got defensive.
Ben - I have a personal thing against Spacehog. It stems back to 96. They pissed me off, as did some of their fans. There, it's out there.. spacehog can wither into oblivion for all I care. :)

Man, everyone's calling me, "BUZZ." It's B-O-Z-Z, but it's all good. Yea, I definitely learned that mainstream fans don't get along with these guys. I give most bands a chance, unless i just instantly don't like the band at all. The last year or so i've been browsing bands like crazy, goin through the web searching for any rock band out there. My list is more than what i actually posted a while ago, but that was the blunt of it. But hey, if there's any bands that anyone thinks i should check out, then drop it on me....

jeremy, it's ok that you don't like spacehog. EVEN IF they wrote the world's greatest pop song. EVEN IF their singer married and impregnated liv tyler. EVEN IF you've never heard the chinese album. it's ok if you don't like them. but you should hear the chinese album. they made 3 albums and this is the only one with any level of consistency. and it is consistently amazing.

Son of a bitch, you're going to make me give it a chance aren't you? You know I'm a curious person when it comes to music. I guess you'll have to hook me up with it sometime and I'll judge from there.
Bozz - sorry, yeah, I guess I just read too many of the comments and got "buzz" in my brain. While the majority of the decoy staff lean towards the post-rock, "artsy" rock, you'll definitely find the ones that don't mind taking some modern/radio rock bands on too. I definitely give them a chance, but have definitely found my tastes veering towards pieces with piano or violin lately. (I was hella excited for the new Chevelle before it came out - and they are definitely, by definition, radio rock) Just watch what bands certain members throw out and find who has the most in common with you and there you go. (Hmm.. sounds like I'm implying you can't find junk on your own - not meaning to sound that way - just meant if you wanted to find a decoyer who you trusted their recommendations - there.. that sounds better). As for this article - the "Bands you may have missed" kind of article - usually there'll be a few that won't have anyone that does it for you - but there always ends up being one with a plethora of people you'll dig sooner or later.

i think its kind of funny when there is a big argument about what is good and what isn't... but its more funny when i don't like any of what is being argued. haha. goes to show you the diversity of the site i suppose.

Nothing wrong with the occasional tangent ... it's not like these threads have a posts limit or something. If anything, the argument with Bozz kept bumping the thread so more people got a chance read it.

The description of North sounds amazing. I can't believe I've never heard of them and they are from Tucson? Too bad I can't 'listen' at work. The link is blocked, but I will check it out. I love Isis, so... :D

piano or violin... does that mean ur a yellowcard fan? probably not, but yea. The new chevelle is pretty good, but i thought that the 3 bonus tracks totally blew. Yea man I'm sure I'm able to find bands that have some common ground with me. I just wanted some suggestions, like people's favorite bands.

yellowcard gives violins a bad name. we like bands with violins that sound like violins. yellowcard doesn't do this. therefore, we do not like yellowcard.

Emilie Autumn - If you want some interesting violin playing, check her out. Some of what she does it strictly classical violin, while some of her other stuff is industrial/darkwave stuff. It's interesting at least. And it's not Yellowcard :)

yeah, sorry if I step on any toes, but I've hated yellowcard since the first time I heard them... hands down.. and that was years before I joined this site. They just irk me badly! I mean like Devotchka or Echo Helstrom... hell a Tori Amos album does a body good!
