You've stumbled upon the wonderful world of Decoy Music's weekly Listening Station. So plug in your iPods or whatever you use and get ready to fill it with items selected by the Decoy staff you know and love. You could also buy an album, even. I know, far-fetched.
Jayme Urges You To Perk Up: Have Heart - The Things We Carry
http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/haveheart.jpg
Website: (http://www.havehearthc.com) :: Listen: (http://www.myspace.com/haveheart)
Once again, Bridge 9 Records has brought some of the best hardcore of the year to the table with Have Heart's hearty serving of in-your-face, high-speed, passionate hardcore that reminds us all that hardcore is still a truly viable genre. Fans of Outbreak, Guns Up!, Champion, Blue Monday, and Verse should be thrilled with Boston-bred Have Heart's latest release, which serves the same style of straight-ahead, positive-minded hardcore that has made kids jump all over each other for years now. Energy, integrity, meaning, passion - a formula that has made Bridge 9 one of the best hardcore labels for years is the same one that makes bands like Have Heart so damned great. Sometimes it's nice to just hear a new band do hardcore the right way and that's exactly what Have Heart does on their latest release, The Things We Carry. Be sure to check out their MySpace page and listen to "The Unbreakable," which is probably my favorite hardcore song of the year... I'll be jumping off my computer desk in the mean time. Genuine, from-the-heart Boston hardcore on Bridge 9 - Get into it!
Chris Conlan Thinks It Was A Massive Coronary: It Dies Today - Sirens
http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/itdiestoday.jpg
Website: (http://www.itdiestoday.com) :: Listen: (http://www.myspace.com/itdiestoday)
I've been listening to the new songs from It Dies Today for about 2 months now and I cannot stop replaying them. While the new songs do have a more melodic side to them, they still are heavy and in-your-face. The end of the song "Sacre Coeur" is absolutely ballistic. Make sure you have your volume and bass turned up loud. "A Constant Reminder" is definitely going to be a big hit for the guys. The song is too damn catchy, especially the chorus.
While I haven't heard all of the Sirens, I have a feel for what to expect from the rest of the album and I have to say I'm amped to hear the it.
Jordan Is A Little Lost Kitty-Cat: Mew - And The Glass Handed Kites
http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/mew.jpg
Website: (http://www.mewsite.com) :: Listen: (http://www.myspace.com/mew)
I saw Mew open up for Bloc Party and Broken Social Scene last week and I was quite impressed. Since then, I haven't really been able to stop listening to the album. Sort of a combination of Sigur Ros, Muse, Coldplay, and a few others. Recently signed to Sony, I hope Mew can get the attention they deserve. In the meantime, check them out and let me know what you think.
Daniel Realized Jesus Can Get Out Of That Crucifixion Deal Pretty Easily If: These Arms Are Snakes - Easter
http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/thesearmsaresnakes2.jpg
Website: (http://www.thesearmsaresnakes.org) :: Listen: (http://www.myspace.com/thesearmsaresnakes)
What isn't there to like about These Arms Are Snakes? Great music to go hand in hand with a great live show. One thing is for sure, though; I'd much rather have snakes for arms than sit on a flight full of snakes and Samuel L. Jackson.
Chris Pandolfo Suggests This In Lieu Of Sleeping Pills: Radiohead - Kid A
http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/radiohead3.jpg
Website: (http://www.radiohead.com) :: Listen: (http://www.myspace.com/onafridayyy)
After listening to Thom Yorke’s The Eraser for the past week or so, I decided to go back and listen to a few Radiohead albums. They used to be one of my favorite bands a few years ago and I’d been slowly growing out of them until a couple days ago. I forgot how much I love some of these songs on each album. Have you ever tried going to sleep while listening to Kid A? I bet you won’t finish the record.
Tim Has Lost His Giddim Mind: Hey Mercedes - Loses Control
http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/heymercedes.jpg
Website: (http://www.heymercedes.com) :: Listen: (http://www.heymercedes.com/downloads.asp)
Something about this record just makes me tingle in all the right spots. There isn't a bad apple on it and it's one of the best emo albums ever recorded. Yeah, I said it. This is right up there with Texas is the Reason's debut EP, The Get-Up Kids' Something To Write Home About and Jimmy Eat World's Bleed American. Too bad this band broke up, because they were totally awesome. Check out the track "It's Been A Blast" because, uh, it's really a blast. If you judged this band based on the crappy Everynight Fire Works, you need to put that behind you and pick this record up. You won't regret it.
Johnny's Got His Fingers In The Cookie Jar: Gasoline Heart - You Know Who You Are
http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/gasolineheart.jpg
Website: (http://www.gasolineheart.com) :: Listen: (http://www.purevolume.com/gasolineheart)
Until about two weeks ago, I had never heard of Gasoline Heart. I'm thinking most people still have not heard of this Orlando-based 5-piece. The band plays a mix of alt-country, indie/classic rock in the vein of The Wallflowers, Tom Petty, Counting Crows, and The Weakerthans and, despite their influences, there is something very unique and authentic about them. One listen to You Know Who You Are will bring your ears a taste of everything from the slide guitar to my personal favorite, the Hammond organ. Everything about this album makes me think of the summer, the country and the open road. It is one of those albums that makes you want to find the nearest country road, roll the windows all the way down, and turn the music up. Gasoline Heart is the new band of summer.
Brent Is A Man Of Few Words: Mastodon - Blood Mountain
http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/mastodon3.jpg
Website: (http://www.mastodonrocks.com) :: Listen: (http://www.mastodonrocks.com)
Why am I listening to this album? Because it's fucking awesome.
Ben Has Never Seen Any Sunrise: The John Butler Trio - Sunrise Over Sea
http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/johnbutlertrio.jpg
Website: (http://www.johnbutlertrio.com) :: Listen: (http://www.myspace.com/johnbutlertrio)
You wouldn't like it. It's hippie music. Lots of lap steel.
Jeremy Deal Almost Got Cut Out Of The Deck: Gogol Bordello - Multi Kontra Culti vs. Irony
http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/gogolbordello.jpg
Website: (http://www.gogolbordello.com) :: Listen: (http://www.myspace.com/gogolbordello)
Gogol Bordello's music is premium. You can see frontman Eugene Hutz in the kick-ass movie Everything Is Illuminated. After seeing the movie, I found out, from a friend, that Mr. Hutz had a band and they were pretty good. That was an understatement! Their more recent release, Gypsy Punk : Underdog World Strike, is good - don't get me wrong - but for my money, this album is their best one that I've heard thus far. It's different, it's upbeat, it's full-flavored, it's even "cultured," if you want to go so far as to say that. It's something you need to give a quick listen - I recommend the opening track from this album for an introduction to the band.
Marc Doesn't Realize Album Titles Don't Apply To Real Life: The Beach Boys - Endless Summer
http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/beachboys.jpg
Website: (http://thebeachboys.com) :: Listen: (http://thebeachboys.com)
Endless Summer is easily one of my favorite pop records. And I just found this out. It wasn't until my sister's wedding, when I let her fiancé borrow my iPod. I let him throw whatever he wanted on, and told him I'd just delete the crap he had. For some reason I kept Endless Summer. I never really gave it much attention until my friend put on "Don't Worry, Baby" and I quickly became addicted. It wasn't the first time I had heard the song, nor the album, but right then and there I finally understood what this band was about. They were more than just singing out about surfing and girls. The arrangement, the vocals, everything. It all mashed together, no one over powered another. It was just perfect. Don't pass on this band like many people have; it's the perfect feel-good record.
