View Full Version : Decoy's Listening Station (August 2, 2006)

This week, Decoy Music's staffers got sucked into a vortex that transported them through space and time…into another dimension. All of them, except for Brandon, Jordan, Rick, Jared, and Ben. So what you see before you is what Ben can only assume the staff would have picked and written had they not suffered through such a tragic and unfortunate affair. Should they return safely, my only hope is they will think I have chosen well and written accurately.

Brandon Utilizes Synonyms To Misquote Popular Movie Quotes: Showbread - Age Of Reptiles

http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/showbread.jpg

Website: (http://www.showbread.net) :: Listen: (http://www.myspace.com/showbread)

Showbread's first album didn't do much for me, but this new effort seems to have taken a more melodic direction. It isn't NFG by any means, but it is just as though the band has seemed to harness their sound a bit more to make for a much more listenable sound. This is almost a mix of Mewithoutyou and He Is Legend. Take it or leave it, but this is what I am listening to this week.

Rick Lets Them Speakers Hum: Honeycreeper - Freakqualizer

http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/honeycreeper.jpg

Website: (http://www.honeycreeper.net) :: Listen: (http://www.myspace.com/honeycreeper)

It’s a lot of fun finding bands that are different than what you usually listen to and actually enjoying them. Honeycreeper is the type of band that doesn’t fit nicely into a small genre subset. Instead they run that gamut. There’s a wicked rhythm section base, consisting of some truly funky bass riffs and punchy, almost jazzy, drumming. Building on top of this foundation is the mixture of ska guitars, punk guitars, and hard rock guitars. Accentuating the already potent mix are well-used tenor and baritone saxophones. Topping it all off are the immediate sounding female vocals. In 11 tracks you get your fair share of jazz, funk, ska, rock, and punk. This shit is good!

Jared Is A Liar: The Human Abstract - Nocturne

http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/thehumanabstract.jpg

Website: (http://hopelessrecords.com/index.php?http://www.hopelessrecords.com/bands.php?Chooseartist=abstract) :: Listen: (http://www.myspace.com/thehumanabstract)

I usually take my metal without. Without singing, that is. Put simply, almost every time a heavy band tries to introduce singing, either it just doesn't fit or the singer is horrible. Not so with The Human Abstract. I checked out the band after Decoy posted streams from their new album and I was blown away. The previously mentioned problems I had with vocals are nowhere to be found here. Lead vocalist Ellis sure can sing his ass off. And he's pretty good at screaming, to boot. There's plenty of shredding to go around on this disc too. What's even stranger is these guys are on Hopeless/Sub City. Not the first label I'd pick for a metal band. Maybe this will start a trend. Nocturne doesn't drop for a few weeks yet (on my birthday, actually), but run and get that stuff as soon as you can.

Jordan Would Be Their Yoko: Bedroom Walls - All Good Dreamers Pass This Way

http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/bedroomwalls.jpg

Website: (http://www.bedroomwalls.com) :: Listen: (http://www.myspace.com/bedroomwalls)

Hailing from California, the Bedroom Walls made a bit of a splash at this years SXSW festival. I just saw these wonderfully talented musicians play for the 2nd time in two weeks last night at Tangier. This is not music hard rock by any means. This is dreamy, shoe gazing, symphony pop. Reminiscent of Ambulance Ltd., Cat Power, and The Shins. Singer Adam Goldman could be the second coming of John Lennon. Yeah, I said it. Do yourself a favor and give them a listen...if you don't like it, at least you can say you gave them a shot. Respek.

Ben Was On Vacation, So He Barely Listened To Anything: Portishead - Dummy

http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/portishead.jpg

Website: (http://www.portishead.co.uk) :: Listen: (http://www.myspace.com/PORTISHEADALBUM3)

Apparently, this short-lived, well-received, most-excellent band is releasing a new album. That is pretty darned great. However, it's easy to worry about whether they'll live up to the greatness of Dummy and their self-titled record. Trip-hop is a pretty tricky genre to enjoy, I've found, but you've gotta own at least one album. Why shouldn't it be Dummy? I'll tell you why: There is no reason why. That's why. Nobody loves me, it's true. The remainder of that lyric doesn’t apply to me, so I'll leave it at that. You know you're good when The Blank Theory covers you.

Alex Davies Ironically Stills Gets Picked On In The Locker Room: Gym Class Heroes - As Cruel As School Children

http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/gymclassheroes.jpg

Website: (http://www.gymclassheroes.com) :: Listen: (http://www.myspace.com/gymclassheroes)

By now, everyone knows who Gym Class Heroes is, even in my home country of England, which some of you may know as the United Kingdom. Even though "popular" usually gets equated with "bad," I think it's safe to say Gym Class Heroes sidesteps this little misunderstanding. Don't get me wrong; The Papercut Chronicles was a great, great, mind-blowingly good album. But I think As Cruel As School Children may just be the best hip hop album ever recorded. Live music behind a fantastic wordsmith and MC. What's not to love? Gym Class Heroes is far and away the best hip hop group ever. No one even comes close. I would have Patrick Stump's man-baby.

Aaron Still Loves Great Music: Blackalicious - Blazing Arrow

http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/blackalicious.jpg

Website: (http://www.blackalicious.com) :: Listen: (http://www.myspace.com/blackalicious)

It's really hard to get excited about music these days. I don't really have a lot of time to listen to new things, which is why I have a staff. When I'm alone trying to keep this site modernized and in high gear, I can't just listen to something I've never heard. It disrupts my flow. Speaking of flow, Gift of Gab has mad flow. It seems like this style of hip-hop is all I really listen to for right now. It's familiar because it's been around forever and it's still superb.

Adam Has Kids, You Know: Raffi - Baby Beluga

http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/raffi.jpg

Website: (http://www.raffinews.com) :: Listen: (http://www.odeo.com/audio/400990/view)

Everyone's favorite childhood songs are on this record, brought to you by the master of flash and dazzle, the mastermind behind the "Bananaphone" phenomenon, Raffi. This album features such unforgettables as the title track, "Baby Beluga," as well as "Day O" and "Kumbaya." It is his breath-taking excursion into lesser-known cuts like "This Old Man," however, that make this record truly stand out.

Johnny Thinks The Ending Is Underrated: The Academy Is… - Almost Here

http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/theacademyis.jpg

Website: (http://www.theacademyis.com) :: Listen: (http://www.myspace.com/theacademyis)

This record really isn't anything great, but it's a solid guitar-pop record. There are better, but then again, there are worse. It's not life-changing, but it'll do in a time of need.

Brent Steven White Is Really Digging That Opening Track On The Mix I Made Him: Diary of Dreams - MenschFeind

http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/diaryofdreams.jpg

Website: (http://www.diaryofdreams.de) :: Listen: (http://www.myspace.com/diaryofdreams)

Ben Rice made me this incredibly awesome mix CD before he came up to visit Portland, Oregon, for a few days. The problem with it is, the opening cut is just so damned good that I can't even move beyond it, really. It's full of pretty nifty up-and-comers, but the thing that holds it together, is its rock, is the band that's been around seemingly forever. Diary of Dreams is probably the best industrial band around right now and they've been at it for over a decade, it turns out! Put your KMFDM records away. They sound like Marilyn Manson compared to this record.

Truman Is Tired Of Being Told He Should Change His Name To Seymour Hoffman: The Sting: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/thesting.jpg

Website: (http://www.scottjoplin.org/biography.htm) :: Listen: (http://www.geocities.com/BourbonStreet/Bayou/9694/music.html)

I know it's crazy, even ill-advised, to make comparisons like this, but when Scott Joplin invented ragtime, it was probably like being a flowerchild and hearing the Sex Pistols for the first time. I can't wait until someone invents ragtime-core. I will eat that up. Excuse me; LICK that up. Like ice cream.

Scott Sometimes Listens To Ordinary Things, But Finds A Way To Make Them: Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Machine

http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/fionaapple.jpg

Website: (http://www.fiona-apple.com) :: Listen: (http://www.fiona-apple.com)

This woman is nuts. She doesn't have any, though. One of the oddest and most alluring voices in pop music, no one saw her latest album, Extraordinary Machine, coming. Sure, people saw it on the horizon, but no one knew to expect an album of this much grandeur. She's found a new way of expressing her hatred without making everything bittersweet. This is the surprise ending of a three-hour movie based loosely on a Stephen King novel where the scriptwriter took a ton of creative liberties.

Jayme Wishes The Mars Volta Would Get Over That Whole "Song-Writing" Thing They Seem So Crazy About: Acid Mothers Temple - IAO Chant From The Cosmic Inferno

http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/acidmotherstemple.jpg

Website: (http://www.acidmothers.com) :: Listen: (http://www.acefu.com/MP3s/AMT%20-%20Track%201.mp3)

If you're like any rational music listener, you've heard of the Mars Volta. Some people hate them, some love them. Some think they're a terrific jam band. Others dislike the jams and wish they'd play more actual songs. Me? I'm the "incredible jams" kinda guy. So when I got my ears around this new one-track album by Japanese legends Acid Mothers Temple, I knew I'd found the perfect album for a person like me. It's as if someone's taken Omar Rodriguez's wankery and sonic explorations to a whole new level. And it is forty-five minutes of awesome. Fuck Amputechture. Get this instead.

Chris Conlan Is On Vacation, So He Brought The Bitchin' Summer Tunes: Pepper - In With The Old

http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/pepper.jpg

Website: (http://www.pepperlive.com) :: Listen: (http://www.myspace.com/pepperlive)

Everyone in the world knows Sublime, the ultimate summer band. Of course, everyone also knows that that lead singer dude offed himself or died in a train wreck or something. Additionally, everyone knows Sublime is the ultimate summer band. You have to bust out their discography every summer. But that shit gets boring, dudes. That's why I listen to a band that takes what Sublime did, then adds lyrics they stole from Atmosphere and other unheard-of dudes to make the songs into songs that aren't covers, but are now songs that are all their own. Totally awesome, bro! Surf's up! Light it up and smoke a ounce ta dis.

Tim Continues To Rep The Jersey Scene With: Bruce Springsteen - Born In The U.S.A.

http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/brucespringsteen.jpg

Website: (http://www.brucespringsteen.net) :: Listen: (http://www.brucespringsteen.net)

Nothing says Jersey quite like a throwback. And if anything is a throwback, it's this album. And if anything anywhere represents Jersey's toughness, grit, individuality, and beautiful, taut buttocks, it's this fucking man right here. Stop being a pussy and learn to love the man that loved Courtney Cox long before you got sick of her whiny ass on Friends. When you're at home watching old reruns of New York (yuck!) based Who's The Boss?, be sure to yell at that Italian cunt Tony Danza and remind him it's a fucking stupid question. Bruce is a spokesman for America for a reason: Because he represents everything that's right about this country. R-O-C-K in the U.S.A.!

Kamran Lives Where I Went On Vacation And He Didn't Even Want A Mix CD: Kyuss - Wretch

http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/kyuss.jpg

Website: (http://www.stonerrock.com/kyuss) :: Listen: (http://www.stonerrock.com/kyuss/albums.html)

No one's ever heard of this band but me. No one else is worthy of their godliness. There are only seven copies of this record in existence and I own the only one that ever left the studio. Fuck you all. You're not worthy! You're not worthy! I have the best taste ever and none of you will ever compare. Nothing compares. NoTHING COMpares to me!

Eric Never Wants To Work Construction: Dillinger Escape Plan - Under The Running Board

http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/dep2.jpg

Website: (http://www.dillingerescapeplan.com) :: Listen: (http://www.myspace.com/tdep)

Not only is this Dillinger's shortest release, it also features two of their best tracks. Everything after this is horseshit. Absolute horseshit. It is by comparison, anyway. I own this on vinyl in triplicate. And I'm not selling!

Chris Pandolfo Eats Pieces Of Shit Like You For Breakfast: Between The Buried And Me - Alaska

http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/btbam4.jpg

Website: (http://www.betweentheburiedandme.com) :: Listen: (http://www.myspace.com/betweentheburiedandme)

Anyone who doesn't listen to this band and put them in their top ten by now, well, if I were someone else, I'd tell you you were a douchebag. But I'm pretty friendly and kind and accepting of differences, so I'll just say I think you're missing out. Alaska is beyond amazing.

Mike Phillips (Scene Point Blank (http://www.scenepointblank.com))Wishes Trevor Dunn Would Die A Long, Slow, Painful Death: Fantomas - Delirium Cordia

http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/fantomas.jpg

Website: (http://www.ipecac.com/bio.php?id=3) :: Listen: (http://www.ipecac.com/audio/045.mp3)

I don't know what it is about Mike Patton that gets my dick wet and my asshole sore. All I know is, if Faith No More ever reunited and pulled Fantomas in tow on a worldwide tour, there'd be so much penile seepage that I'd single-handedly turn every pair of blue jeans at every single show on tour into corduroys. And if you think that's hot, wait until you hear this 70-minute, single-track masterpiece.

Brandon, Jordan, Jared, Ben, and me were the only ones to contribute this week, so the others "magically" appeared to Ben in his brain through a "vortex" of thought.

Or something.
