You've stumbled upon the wonderful world of Decoy Music's weekly Listening Station. So plug in your iPods or whatever you use and get ready to fill it with items selected by the quaint Decoy staff members you know and love. You could also buy an album, even. I know, far-fetched.

Daniel Takes His Turn Playing The Overly-Conservative Catholic: Set It Straight - My Favorite Words

http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/setitstraight.jpg

Website: (http://www.twelvegaugehc.com) :: Listen: (http://www.myspace.com/setitstraight)

Featuring former members of Till Death, Set It Straight are all about the positive, and of course, the straight edge life styles. Enjoy life, live fast and play hard - three things that Set It Straight undoubtably do best. Fusing hardcore with slight hints of metal, mushed between strong riffs, a handful of intense gang vocals, and the "cliched" posi lyrics, you're bound to have a great time."Every day is a holiday to me, celebration of life!" For fans of Stay Gold, Minor Threat, With Honor, Champion. You know, the obvious choices.

Marc Knows It's All Right Because He's Saved By The Bell: Bayside - Bayside

http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/bayside.gif

Website: (http://www.baysiderocks.com) :: Listen: (http://www.purevolume.com/bayside)

I normally tend to stay away from Victory bands. Unoriginality comes to mind. I got sent the Bayside record from them, and let it sit on my shelf for months. It wasn't until the death of their drummer, when my friend came over and saw it on my shelf and pulled it. I was pretty much shocked how catchy and sincere it was, something I really wasn't expecting. Since then this has been put in constant rotation.

This record is pretty much as emo (I fucking hate that term) as you can get. Though theirs nothing really cliché about it. They hit all the key spots relationships, growing up, being lonely, mistakes, and having such a shitty life (yeahhhh). This record should be written in marker "Marc Stay Away", but I really can't. It just pulls you in, and you eventually keep hitting the repeat button, which is what a record should do.

Chris Conlan Has Discovered A New Style Of Gambling AND A New Innuendo For "Penis" With: Thriving Ivory - Thriving Ivory

http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/thrivingivory.jpg

Website: (http://www.thrivingivory.com) :: Listen: (http://www.myspace.com/thrivingivory)

Thriving Ivory hail from San Francisco, CA and are slowly making a name for themselves around the states. I'm not even sure how I even came about to hearing these guys, but I'm glad I did because they play some of the best modern rock I've heard in awhile. While most modern rock bands rely on catchy singles, most don't actually write a "full" album. With Thriving Ivory's forthcoming self-titled album, they will undoubtedly catch the attention of many major label A&R's with their infectious sound and heartfelt lyrics. With a lead singer like Clayton Stroope, you can't go wrong. He is able to bring you into the song and make you feel apart of it and with the backing of the rest of the band, they create rock greatness.

If I had to put money on the line, it would be on these guys.

Tim Explains Why No One Should Hang Out With The Tin Man: As Friends Rust - A Young Trophy Band In The Parlance Of Our Times

http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/asfriendsrust.jpg

Website: (http://www.aversion.com/bands/asfriendsrust/) :: Listen: (http://www.myspace.com/asfriendsrustrip)

Although they broke up shortly after this EP's release, As Friends Rust was at the top of their game. How much better could a band be? I mean, they consisted of the original Shai Hulud vocalist, as well as members of awesome bands like Culture (who had a kickass split back with Kindred like ten years ago), and they're from the same town as Hot Water Music, who also rocks/rocked. Anyway, this was my favorite release of 2002, and it still manages to get my juices flowing four years later. Check out "It's More Than Just Music, It's A Hairstyle" because it's the absolute tits. (Pardon me for saying 'tits' I just felt the need to this instance only).

Johnny Has Contracted A Ton Of STD CDs: Saves The Day - Sound The Alarm

http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/savestheday3.jpg

Website: (http://www.savestheday.com) :: Listen: (http://www.vagrant.com/std_moneen/soundtree.html)

So I think pretty much everyone except myself loathed In Reverie. Why? I'm not sure. Maybe it was too slow. Maybe it was too much of a departure from the sound that made Saves The Day famous. Well all of you In Reverie haters are in luck because STD's new album Sound The Alarm is old school. The lyrics are dark and angry, (Back are the lyrics of self-mulilation), the music is fast yet melodic and it all just fits. This new album is no Stay What You Are, but its pretty darn close...why did everyone hate In Reverie so much? Was it the song about the monkey?....

Ben Says Hello To Ridicule: Finch - Say Hello To Sunshine

http://www.decoymusic.com/images/ListeningStation/finch.jpg

Website: (http://www.finchmusic.com) :: Listen: (http://www.purevolume.com/finch)

People (I'm not going to name names) who were disappointed by this record don't understand music. With What It Is To Burn, Finch paved the way for future success. All they had to do was continue to make the same album over and over and they'd have been platinum within 2-3 records. Instead, they began revisiting old Deftones records and started up an unhealthy infatuation with Mike Patton's works with Faith No More and faint touches of Fantomas-inspired vocals. The end result was an album that saw old Finch meshing perfectly with the new Patton influence and drawing even more aggressively from the Deftones pool. It was a good thing. It's pretty much what a rock record should be: friendly to those who don't really delve deeply into music, yet with enough experimentation and aggression to keep those looking for something more far from upset. But the band forgot to factor in that kids who like albums like What It Is To Burn fear change. So this record came across as strictly alien and flopped, which led the band to break up, and I became even more embittered than ever. I finally found a band I thought I could use as a connection between myself and musical morons…and the morons still couldn't stay with me. Goddammit.

Brandon Is A Big Fan Of Quiet Time: Shearwater - Palo Santo

Website: (http://www.shearwatermusic.com) :: Listen: (http://myspace.com/shearwater)

Thanks to Adam I started listening to these guys. The music they make is simple, stunning, and delicate. It will lull you and yet astound you at the same time. Check these guys out if you get a chance! If you like Okkervil River chances are pretty high that you might like these guys!

Props for picking Bayside. They're the only one of those powerpop/emo bands that are actually good.

Instead of making three seperate posts:
I liked In Reverie, I wasn't a fan of their newest effort though. They only had one or two that were worth listening to, in my opinion.

Yeah...and now I just found out I may be playing a show with them on the 15th. Sweet.
That's fucking sweet.

fuck, i meant to send in one for The First Step
Word. They released a pretty good album.

im glad someone stood up for bayside...sirens and condolences was a great cd and so was their self titled second effort. The miniscule amount of hope that victory has in providing a good band (by good i dont mean shit music that alot of people buy)...lies is bayside...and a few other bands..like BTBAM (even though i never really got into them).

I've been putting off checking out Bayside...maybe I will.
As for Finch, it was just too much of a change from their last album and it cost em......First Emoscreamo, then switch to a dark something, if they were still around, I wouldn't be surprised if their 3rd major release was a country album. That'll get their fan base back!

I honestly didn't hear Finch's first album until after I heard "Sunshine"... so I can imagine it put off people who were fans of the first one quite a bit - having said that - I loved "Sunshine" as a heavy vibe record with some haunting harmonies... the first one still just doesn't do it for me nearly as well.

I relistened to Finch's Say Hello to Sunshine and let me say, that is a damn good album. For some reason, I always end up loving the album that everyone hates. Case in point, I really liked In Reverie.
