This is an album that screams Zach Roth, so instead of trying my hands at reviewing a genre to which I may feel inadequate about (size of your library does matter!), I feel it is time to try my hand at an impression. Thus, I give you Decoy Music’s review of Medium Bastard according to Zach Roth.
Sometimes I need to be sold on a band, and sometimes their name is You Slut!, and their album title is Medium Bastard, and I just have a deep-seated need to listen. If you like math rock as much as I do, well then pat yourself on the back for your superb music taste. It has been a great year for the genre already, as releases by Invalids and Mental Architects have brought their A-game.
Before popping in (metaphorically speaking, of course) this album, I was deep in the throes of my latest poetic masterpiece, taking inspiration from how damn boring Indiana is. After pressing play, I went from zero to this in a matter of seconds. I know I'm quite predictable, but well, fuck it, this is Zach Roth music. You Slut is a dirty, dirty girl that has been sloppy with its sound. The band refers to its genre as "math-Smarties-disco-pop-cheese-waltzcore," which is spot on and messed up at the same time.
What I love most about the album is that nothing is over-long or drawn out; instead, each song gets in, does its thing, and kindly leaves in four minutes or less. Basically, it's the exact opposite of what you want with good sex, except it's just as awesome. To get an idea of what drives You Slut!, think of these English lads as the anti-Bill Lohr. Mr. Lohr runs entirely on PBR, motorcycle exhaust fumes, and the WWE, so take all of the negative feelings you have toward those things, and imagine the exact opposite. That’s how stellar this album is.
The two-headed monster of "Pitch & Putt with You Slut!" and "Fifzteen" roar out of the gate to showcase what the album has to offer: Shaq-sized riffs, more math than an engineering problem, and elegant post-rock dynamics. I would happily quote my favorite lyrics (as I'm wont to do), but, yeah, I can't do that on an instrumental album. Next up is "Elton Chong," which is the Vern Troyer of math rock; while it's short in size, it's well-equipped. Avoiding hyperbole is nearly impossible, as the song is a sheer two minutes of awesome-sauce dripping onto this math rock-flavored ice cream sundae. This album may be entitled Medium Bastard, but there is little that isn't massive on this excellent release. It's time to hop on the You Slut! train now, just don’t mention the band name to your grandmother.

I actually had a lot of fun writing this. Despite my Roth-ian hyperbole and gushing, I quite enjoyed the album. I just wished it were longer than 25 minutes.

Very entertaining review. That being said, I don't have any desire to listen to this. I have enough math everyday at work as an engineer, so this would likely drive me crazy..

To be fair, I'd call this straight-up instrumental before I'd call it math rock.

So would I. It reminded me a bit of Irepress at times, but it really doesn't have much lasting appeal for me. Cool review though.

Alright I gave in, this isn't that bad actually. Not something I'd write home about. I'd call it instrumental math rock, and I could imagine it would be absolutely terrible if it had vocals.

I thought this was competently done, but it didn't grab me like I wanted. A good slut really knows what she's doing and can make you feel whatever you're paying her to feel. This slut is still learning the ropes. She's got mad handy skills, but needs to hone her other abilities.
