Riding the success of their highly acclaimed Capitol Records debut, Ocean Avenue, Yellowcard released Lights and Sounds in 2005 to minimal success. While the album did sell quite a bit, for many it was a change that fans were not willing to accept. After some confusion and a relatively short touring schedule the guys headed back into the studio with long-time producer Neal Avron and basically created the album that should’ve followed Ocean Avenue.

On Paper Walls, Yellowcard brings back the sound that launched them into the mainstream. Basically, you could call it “summer pop/punk.” Right from the get go, the album starts off with the vibrant track “Takedown”. Sean Mackin’s violin playing is back in the forefront after being pretty non-existant on Lights and Sounds, the drumming is back to speedy pop/punk tempos, and their ability to create insatiable melodies is back as well. Probably the catchiest track on the album, “Fighting”, shows that Yellowcard is not down for the count. When the chorus hits, it’s anthemic and, like always, Ryan Key’s distinct vocals flourish. Plus, with any Yellowcard album you’ll be sure to hear a signature Yellowcard ballad or two (“Shadows and Regets” and “Dear Bobbie”).

It would be easy to do a track-by-track analysis of the album, but it isn’t really necessary. The songs mentioned above paint the image needed for the listener to grasp what the rest of the album has to offer. This isn’t an album where you will hear 2-3 memorable songs. Paper Walls is an album full of them.

One could go on and on about how Paper Walls is a breath of fresh air for the pop/punk genre. There a few bands these days that can match the intensity that Yellowcard brings to their music and to their live shows. For those who had doubts, be rest assured that Paper Walls is what you were waiting for.

i have to agree that this record is indeed awesome. it's a throwback to ocean avenue, but it ends up being a better record. hopefully people still care enough to check it out, because lights and sounds sucked.

Why can't pop bands be allowed to have good scores without people here becoming visibly angry?

because this is a place for opinions. to each his own, and my own says pop is a virus on music. except for that catchy umbrella song...but in all seriousness, anger leads to the dark side so beware.

 because some people on this site are homos....
if you don't have any constructive criticism or intelligence, don't comment otherwise you just look like a turd

If you don't like pop/punk why are you commenting, because you are an immature retard. period.

sorry for the rant....but maybe someone that actually likes this type of music can comment, maybe tell me something about the album or a track...not just...pop/punk blows.....get that garbage out of here.

4/5 is allowable. 4.5/5 is ungodly.

Bands like Yellowcard and Paramore aren't even capable of making 4 star albums. Booooooooooooo to this review.

Yeah, 4 means there's still some subjectivity involved, 4.5 implies that even people who don't like the genre will still like it. At least that's my take on ratings.

oh, and post rock kids feel afraid their beards are gonna get shaved if they listen to pop records.

God forbid if you catch one listening to Yellowcard, but it's natural to be afraid, right?

More like I'll need a lobotomy, or anything that could make me forget what my ears had to endure, but well the beard shaving point is valid too I guess...
