There’s a reason why bands like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath are considered legendary bands to this day, and were considered some of the most innovative bands in their time: it’s because they were damn good. It’s this same reason why Wolfmother is a huge breath of fresh air in the world of mainstream music today. It’s time for bands like Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance to step down and let classic rock take the throne once more.

While Wolfmother has been a fairly popular band down under (Australia for those of you who don’t get it), they have just recently started their takeover of American radio stations with their hit single “Woman”, from this self-titled debut, and the song “Love Train” from one of their previous EP’s being featured on an iPod commercial. In a nutshell, this is, in fact, classic rock in a current day environment. It’s not exactly anything new, but it’s not exactly ripping off bands like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and The Mars Volta.

With everything from flowing bass lines to elegant vocals and all of those classic beats that make you want to air drum to this entire record, it’s safe to say that there’s finally at least one good album that also happens to have material being played on the radio. The majority of this album has pretty straight forward chord progressions, up beat tunes, and nothing too technical, but if you read in-between the lines, you’ll find tracks like “Mind’s Eye” that slow it down a little bit, but have such an epic sound that you’ll undoubtedly be in awe.

Being fairly simple is also Wolfmother’s downside as well at times, with some songs just being kind of blah (“White Unicorn” being one of them). Either way put down whatever “top seller” CD you’re thinking of buying at the store, and head directly to the W's CD section. Even the most diehard music fan can’t deny this band's power.

i like this album and band quite a lot. good review, but why a Mars Volta reference? i don't see this appealing to the average MV fan, nor does it sound like MV. i've heard this reference before and i don't understand why.

I haven't listened to any of Wolfmother's songs yet but I was wondering if their sound is similar to The Sword?

not nearly as heavy as the sword. not as dark either. i think it's similar in sound to the White Stripes' Elephant

Yea, there's not a whole lot of the Mars Volta influence in there, but there were some parts that reminded me of the less-experimental songs that Mars Volta put out such as "The Widow" or some select songs off of De-loused.

It's like The Datsuns never existed. I don't see why Wolfmother shouldn't suffer like they did, it's literally identical. Both perfectly enjoyable, mind.
