Good metal should be the type of music that makes you feel like a tiny molecule of air witnessing a volcano exploding. Albums like Undoing Ruin by Darkest Hour do this easily. You do not have to break barriers to write good metal, but for God's sake, just try something a little different every now and again. I had heard This Is Exile 300 times before I had even heard of Whitechapel. The same death growls, goblin yelps, pummeling drums and machine gun riffs that you will hear in every third MySpace metal band's profile are all here.

Unhallowed by The Black Dahlia Murder and albums of that ilk are a lot of fun, but extremely clichéd, deathcore. If you have heard As Blood Runs Black, With Blood Comes Cleansing, or any of their contemporaries, you will be familiar with Whitechapel's niche of the metal genre. The problem with This Is Exile is that it is no fun whatsoever. Whitechapel frequently execute humongous blast beats and roar or yelp vocal tirades, but trying to make a record sound as in your face and hard as possible does not always made for that great of a listen.

Most of the tracks on This Is Exile leap into a frenzied rage and leave little time to breath, but this gets very tedious, very quickly. This is the type of album which sounds so unvaried that you barely recognize that it is still playing after one or two songs. It is really that dull of a listen. The same format of break-neck intro, some pointless breakdowns, and finger defying fretwork over typical drum machine-esque drumming makes for a very rigid, generic, formulaic album.

Decent metalcore should be about raw emotion and passion. Sadly This Is Exile seems to be all about following the boring deathcore crowd like a group of timid sheep. Whitechapel throw around 200mph riffs and blast beats right, left and center, but sadly you will have probably fallen asleep after the first half of the album.

This album was wayyyy better than two stars.
But I do prefer The Somatic Defilement 20x more than This Is Exile.

Dear god, this band is terrible. And the reviewer doesn't seem to know much about metal either. Undoing Ruin? DH's worst record by far.

This is one of the deathcore albums that I don't mind admitting that I listen to. Technical Death is still a preferred genre (anata, the faceless, psycroptic,decapitated,gorguts,etc..), but as far as the breakdown scene goes, I can't get enough of this one. 4/5 for me.

Fallujah - The Harvest Wombs
The New Law - The Fifty Year Storm
The Mars Volta - Noqtourniqet

This review is rather well-written, and this album is nothing special whatsoever. Just listen to All Shall Perish or Despised Icon for good Deathcore. Leave bands like this and WBCC in the 'good try guys, but please fucking disband already' pile.

Also, Darkest Hour are terrible.

Darkest Hour's latest release is their worst, but that's a relative statement because all their releases are "good" to me.

I hate that you don't like this Matt; I thought that you might like how diabolical they sound.

Don't get me wrong, it's not particularly bad. I'd just rather listen to the aforementioned bands.

Whitechapel wish they were .1% as good as Darkest Hour.

Darkest Hour stands so tall above most metal these days.

i listened to this today and i thought it was well written. They have developed some nice atmospherics in the guitars, just a little too much reliance on the breakdowns towards the end. I can't see how this is worse than Somatic Defilement though. I thought that cd was just unbelievably monotonous and just immature in general. This is a step in the right direction. I'd give it a 3.5
