Let me be honest. It’s difficult to review an album like this. War of Ages, a metalcore band with Christian leanings from Erie, PA, is playing a sound that’s so dead it’s ready for a revival. In fact, the very monotony of the genre has caused its description to become repetitive. How many times can one use phrases like “Swedish-metal influenced” and “double-bass aplenty”? And the song titles are some of the most uninspired I have ever seen. I mean, c’mon, “Stand Your Ground”? “Only the Strong Survive”? Are you kidding me? My biggest complaint, though, is that the songs contain too many mid-tempo parts; which plod along and hinder the momentum. These sections seem to mainly come courtesy of the rhythm guitarist. But when the reigns are let loose on the lead guitarist, he shreds with the best of them, as exemplified by the concluding instrumental section of “Battle On.”

Another major problem is the abruptness of the songs’ transitions. They leave the listener teased and disoriented. And instead of keeping precise time, the drummer’s principal concern seems to be injecting double-bass into every possible opening. The record does have some bright spots. The acoustic intro to “Only the Strong Survive” is tastefully done. And the vocalist screams with some of the best articulation I’ve heard. It’s quite rare to be able to understand every word of a hardcore vocalist. Alas, War of Ages seems destined to suffer the same fate of countless other similar acts: a multitude of lineup and name changes and a collection of bandanas with no train to rob. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go listen to the new Between the Buried and Me.

I dunno, I kinda dig this disc. It's really really raw, which I like a lot. It also feels like a heavier version of older Boy Sets Fire, a band I used to love to death. I'd give these guys a 3/5 or 3.5/5.

fuck, that line is awesome.

I'm not here to make things better; only to observe and pass judgement.

I really really liked this CD. I think this guy has no idea what he's talking about. Just kidding. I won't force anyone to like it but I think it's some good shit.
