War Of Ages have been one of the only metalcore bands that I have been able to stand in the past two years. Their previous release, Pride Of The Wicked, displayed well put together songs infused with the most metal of solos and thrash parts ever, with passionate screams of meaningful lyrics by Leroy Hamp. Their latest release, Fire From The Tomb, is a re-release of their debut self-titled LP, but it’s just as fresh as ever. The band took the time to go back into the studio and completely re-record their self-titled album, while re-hashing the songs at the same time, making them sound the way they were meant to sound in the first place. They even threw in a brand new song entitled “The Awakening”. However, the re-recorded "My Solitude" happens to be one of the strongest of the album.

The song begins with unquestionable energy and aggressiveness, never dying down. This is definitely a song that would sound incredible live. Every transition in this song is perfect, and it leads into more monstrous parts with more impressive guitar leads throughout the entire track.

Other stand out songs are “Only The Strong Survive” with its great acoustic guitar introduction that really showcases this band’s talent, and “Battle On” with it’s melodic break late in the song and emotional build up into vibrant guitar leads and solos. Sometimes repetition kills a song but in this track’s case the repeating of the ending melody is fantastic.

As you make your way to the end of the CD it begins to slow down as most of the songs sound too much alike, although each of them are good individually. A lot of the parts later in the album remind me too much of earlier sections in the first half of the CD. Another thing that bothered me is, although the album was re-recorded, the production is still muddy and the bass drum sounds sloppy at times, but it’s nothing to completely ruin the record.

I would recommend Fire From The Tomb to any metalcore fan even if you have heard War Of Ages' self titled debut. It’s fun to listen to the songs and hear what changes they’ve made to the originals. There is nothing that completely blew my mind with these songs -- they are all just very solid tunes and together make a good record. I’d love it if more bands went back and re-recorded their first albums with better production, while adding a few twists in there as well. In the meantime I’ll settle for listening to Fire From The Tomb, another fun metal album to rock out with this summer.

Umm, the new song is The Awakening, not My Solitude. You also failed to mention the reason for re-recording the album in the first place: because it wasn't heavy enough.

But, I forgive ya!

Yikes, you're right. It is the awakening. Well, I still think My Solutide is the best song on the cd. My bad for that error.
