What’s in an album title? An album's title is rarely ever an indication of which mood or tone the band have decided to strike with a given release. Instead, the majority of albums today are for the most part titled after something quirky, clever, obscure, or named after a particular song on the album. However, there is absolutely nothing ambiguous about the extreme appropriateness of the title of Verse's latest album.

The record even begins with a song of rebellion. Aggression drags the listener through an opening calm nineteen seconds in “The New Fury” before igniting an unrelenting fire under vocalist Sean Murphy. Strangely, although songs like “Scream”, “Unlearn”, and “Earth & Stone” take the album's momentum down a notch in pace, the anguish and ferocity that pours from the band – most notably in the closing moments of “Unlearn” as Murphy yells the song's name repeatedly – in these quieter moments is able to preserve the destructive tone held throughout the album. And although the latter half of Aggression begins to slow down, Verse have managed to maintain an unimaginable consistency in 28 minutes and 33 seconds, as Aggression is simply an unyielding assault.

As per usual, Murphy’s lyrical content primarily focuses passionately on political dissent and war, the intrigue and dangers of Hollywood, regret and love lost, the prosperous versus the unfortunate and impoverished. Possibly the most eye opening, thought provoking lyrics from Murphy’s pen are found in the “Story of A Free Man”, a six-minute song broken up into three chapters; “Chapter One: The End of Innocence”, “Chapter Two: The Cold Return”, and “Chapter Three: Serenity”. “Chapter One” tells the tale of a young boy's storybook life before his father is sent off to war and killed in combat. The boy eventually jumps into a life of uncontrolled rage and depression as he embraces addiction to numb his loss. “Chapter Two” jumps forward to the boy, now a man, living homeless under a bridge numbing his mind with addiction. Realizing he’s hit rock bottom, he decides it’s time to take control of his life, leading into “Chapter Three”. The final chapter is solely comprised of a proficiently placed buildup and explosion as the young man now walks away from a life of pain (buildup) and surfaces a free man (explosion).

Verse have created the audio equivalent of diving on top of a live grenade with Aggression. The band have undoubtedly surpassed all expectations of surmounting those placed before them by From Anger And Rage, and if Aggression is an indication of the direction the band are headed in, Verse will continue to outdo themselves time and again.

...or named after a particular song on the album.

Maybe the song is named after the album. Eh? Eh?

But seriously, the first track from this disc that came on the Bridge 9 sampler is amazing. I don't usually dig straight hardcore, but I want to get my hands on this one for sure.

Gotta say, good shit. I'm not a huge straight up hardcore guy either, but this album is seriously awesome stuff. Has a somewhat Modern Life is War feel to it.

You need to continue to listen to some actual good hardcore until it clicks then.

That might be it, I'm not a huge fan of traditional hardcore. Too punk influenced for me. The album's great for hardcore, but not great for me.
