VersaEmerge hit the scene in a big way with their debut EP, Perceptions. The strength of those eight songs got them signed to Fueled by Ramen, which has to have been one of the label’s best pickups, alongside fellow female fronted group Paramore, who VersaEmerge draw many comparisons to time and time again. It’s inevitable, though, based on their sound and sultry, yet powerful vocal styles.

This self titled EP is their first release with the label and while it doesn’t have the immediate power and presence that Perceptions burst at the seams with, it’s got something much more potent. As a whole, the EP pushes forward a guitar style that matches the creativity and atmospheric feel of a space rock band with the hook laden bursts of a radio friendly pop band. At first listen this EP had little to offer over their previous work, but given multiple listens through, it shows itself as a stand out piece of material. VersaEmerge are packed full of grooves and rhythms that would make an R&B artist shiver and hooks that would make even the best pop bands jealous. However, it’s not all good news here.

Unfortunately in the production process of the album, someone thought the inclusion of orchestral instruments was a great idea. In certain applications, if mixed correctly, they work really well. However, whoever mixed this album must have fallen asleep during the orchestral parts, as they’re overwhelmingly loud and make “Whisperer” a next to unlistenable track. Closed up by a remake of “Clocks” from the band’s first release, this record proves to be a massive teaser for the impending full length to follow. The potential VersaEmerge has is staggering; now let’s see what they do with it.

Sorry, gotta disagree.  This EP was severely underwhelming.  I was hoping for so much more and I was bored to tears by this.

to me, this band is a generic rehash of paramore and circa survive, both of which are decent but just "regular" bands.  rehashing some "regular" sounds makes you a sucky band.  also, cool "eerie" string sections or whatever don't help.

How is Circa a regular band? What is regular about what they do?

You are spot on, however, about Versa sounding like a mix between them.

They've progressed nowhere with this EP. They need to do something to sound more unique and distinguish themselves already.

lots of hype before they got signed.. now just a bland band.  they still have a chance tho since they haven't released an LP yet.  they know what they need to do.
