Venia comes from that same strain of old school hardcore that was all the rage a few years ago, and people speak of how they are the hardest working band out there… and blah blah blah. We've heard this all before, haven't we? Their newest release is I’ve Lost all Faith in Myself, a short 5 song EP. The music is fast paced and full of high adrenaline fist pumping theatrics... that bore the hell out of me.
The opening track “Crux” comes complete with gang vocals, which is obviously a must have for any hardcore band. But where are the dance beats and metal tinges? Oh Venia, I see you are too hardcore for that! Okay, I can work with that... but you should know this has all been done a million times over in the last decade. Just about every local hardcore band, especially Christian hardcore bands, have used this basic template to churn out some bland songs.
I am not going to go any further than this, since the individual tracks are all so extremely similar. If you like faith based hardcore music, you may dig this record, but for anyone who has even remotely paid attention to the scene it is just another shallow and pedantic CD.

Not really sure what you were trying to accomplish with this. Are you mocking their style of hardcore? Are you mocking their beliefs? I dig this album and their message. It's straight hardcore, no frills, nothing. Simple and straight to the point, what hardcore is suppsed to be.

It is what hardcore should be, I agree with you on that one. But I have just heard this type of band one too many times. Tell me what is different about this band that would stand out amongst the countless other straight forward hardcore bands?

Nothin is different. Does it always have to be different though? Just playin devils advocate here, btw. Not starting an internet feud haha
Los Angeles
Haha don't worry no internet feud. No I don't think it always has to be different, there are some great bands out there now that are just exact copies of their predecessors but do it well. Venia just doesn't do hardcore well.

hardcore is a pretty basic genre though. most bands aren't really too original with it, but i'm not too into hardcore because of that reason. i do enjoy when bands have something special to add to the genre, but other than that, i agree with your comments.

Too old to bother, too young to give a shit.

by basic i mean that most bands i've heard in hardcore generally bring the same music to the table. i'm not saying all bands do, but i do enjoy some hardcore bands i listen to that bring unexpected energy or something different that most bands don't. i do like hardcore, i just don't like all of it. i guess most genres are that way though.

Is this another hardcore album that sounds similar to a lot of other hardcore? Yes. Are they competent in what they are doing at least? Absolutely. Is this better than Attack Attack, Brokencyde and every other band actually worthy of only one half star? 100% better. This is not 1 star. It's 2 and a half or 3. People who like competent hardcore will like this, not rewriting the book or anything, but not bad.
In the same way that we should reserve 5 stars for MIND BLOWING albums, one half star should also be saved for MIND BLOWING albums, just on the opposite end of the spectrum. IMO.

Also, to be completely fair, most Christian hardcore DOESN'T follow this line of hardcore. That's where the keyboards and lame ass clean vocals come in, followed by tracks of prayer or worship. This band would fit quite nicely next to a Figure Four or NIV style band, ya know, actual hardcore, not more lame August Burns Red worship.

@Venia tweeted us and said "It's a hardcore record. You missed the point."

Haha I didn't miss any point, it was a snooze fest.

Do you even like the style of hardcore that they play?
Los Angeles
I actually do enjoy this style of music.
