If drum and bass electronica can be perfected, Aaron Funk, mastermind behind Venetian Snares, has achieved it. Cavalcade of Glee and Dadaist Happy Hardcore Pom Poms is an experience and journey into the bizarre, rhythmically unclassifiable.

This album embraces the drilling syncopation of what can only be described as remarkable and completely original. “Donut,” which begins the album, fails to follow specific patterns of rhythm and instead throws fifteen or twenty sounds working together into a mix best served with headphones. Like this song, most of the album is upbeat and driving. But Funk does mellow things out with the beautiful “P,” which sounds more like Ulrich Schnauss than Aphex Twin. This song is crafted with two keyboards in an answer and call mode, attempting to indirectly harmonize with one another.

One might get the feeling Funk is influenced by old-school Nintendo games with songs like “Vache,” which adopts and abuses sounds from the game Contra, and “Pwntendo,” which by its name alone suggests something.

To be fair, a lot of the songs do follow a slightly noticeable patterns that can be cracked with a close listen: Broken beats laying the foundation of a seemingly random insertion of cutesy noises and Star Wars sounding interstellar madness. But Funk isn’t a fool. “Swindon,” the albums best track, breaks free of this framework in a truly amazing display of creativity. The song goes beyond what it achieves in the first 10 seconds, and slowly evolves into adhering to beautiful flow. This song possesses some of the best moments in electronic music I’ve ever heard.

Still, the critic in me questions this albums content. Either the sounds created on this album are an accident (no doubt, a beautiful one), or Funk is indeed a genius waiting to be discovered.

Hmmnnn...I'm still boycotting this album for now..Haha, yeah, tis a little harsh but after the dreadful mess that was Meathole I feel justified..Rossz Csillag Allat Született was and still is the highlight of Mr Snares' repertoire, it showed us how truly talented this guy is..A huge leap from the days of Higgins Ultra Low Track Glue Funk, Doll, Doll, Doll and Find Candace, which are by far the best of his earlier stuff methinks..
