Through the mid-nineties and well into the current decade Jon Crosby has brought forth individualistic music that has avoided major trends, while still giving him a rather impressive following. Earlier in his career, there was a strong electronic/dance influence in his work and as his career has progressed, his approach has simplified greatly. Where Music for People was a more in your face electro-rock album, ten years later April showcases a much different side of Vast, with a majority of the album’s content merely being Crosby and an acoustic guitar. Despite the earlier similarities in Vast’s music to groups like Depeche Mode and The Cure, April’s content would fit nicely along side the likes of Elliot Smith and Ryan Adams.
Though this album has a stripped down approach, the themes and style that brought Vast his following are still ever present. That isn’t to say that much of April’s content doesn’t show a new side of Crosby either. “One More Day”, for example, expresses vulnerability and regret that I’ve yet to hear in Crosby’s work, and the folk oriented “I’m Too Good” explores new territory in terms of genres, but has a catchiness to it that only Vast could be responsible for. In terms of theme, “I am a Vampire” is a fun track that fits well with much of the act’s back catalog, while not feeling in the least unoriginal. Each track on this album seems to explore a unique emotion and this makes for an album full of material that fails to get old or feel repetitive.
April is proof that shifting genres can, in fact, be a very positive change when done well. Crosby’s stripped down approach for this album allows the listener to focus in on the message and style of the music without getting lost in over produced clutter. This album is also proof that Jon Crosby is a musician who has yet to pass his prime.
