After a long time coming, well yeah, close to 9months after its expected release we finally get to listen to the soothing sounds of Punk Goes Acoustic. The third in the series of 'Punk Goes' from Fearless Records and quite possibly the one that could appeal to a wide variety of people just by naming the bands that are involved with the compilation.
Why did it take so damn long? Well apparantly they had some trouble with the Victory bands and were going to be forced to remove them.. the clear resolve I foundout to this problem without removing the Victory bands was that the first 50,000 copies of the compilation contained a added bonus disc with four songs from Fearless and four from Victory. A good resolve without losing any bands.
When looking through the tracklist a few bands jump out at me right away.. the first being Thrice, as they picked maybe one of my least favorite songs I was actually pretty impressed with how it came out, the backup harmonies and the introcate sounds made this song jump out at me after my first listen. Then Yellowcard blared through my speakers giving me a little taste of what these guys can do acoustic, very catchy and very good.. sound was very crisp. Then as I skipped through a slew of songs that did not appeal the slightest I made it to Strung Out's song which is one of the standout tracks on this album, I mean how often do you get to hear an acoustic song by Strung Out, and they flat nailed it.. after playing through some other decent songs from From Autumn to Ashes, and Thursday I found myself prepared for the Rise Against track.. one listen.. wasn't impressed. Not sure what it was about this song but doing it acoustic really took a lot of the emotion and energy out of the song and I feel it fell short.. Lets get to my favorite song real quick before I recap. Strike Anywhere deliver one of the best songs I have ever heard acoustic, the raspy voice of Thomas grasps you and its such a change from their in your face aggressive style that you can't help but fall madly in love with this song, by far the best on the album.
Fearless Records has done it again, creating the best acoustic compilation ever and assembling one of the best line-ups with whats hot in music today. This is one of those compilations that will continually make its way back into your player. They've found a gold-mine with the 'Punk Goes' series. How about Punk Goes Grunge next?
