The history of Unwritten Law could almost be written into a book or movie if you prefer. They’ve been around for 14 years, had five top 20 singles, three of which hit the top 10 and one #1. Also, the band has been dropped by every label they’ve been on and lost members like no other. Vocalist Scott Russo is the only remaining original member of the band. To say the least, it’s honestly surprising to see the band alive and well.
While The Hit List was supposed to be the band’s first “Best Of” compilation, their previous label Interscope Records pulled a “I’m a major label and I’m better than you” act and decided to release their own Best Of CD. Let’s just say that pissed off the band quite a bit, but nonetheless this new compilation was worth it. The guys went back into the studio with the current line-up and re-recorded all the “older” songs, even tracks from Oz Factor and The Blue Room. The only exceptions were the ones from their Here’s to the Mourning album and the two new tracks “Shoulda Known Better” and “Welcome to Oblivion”.
Most of us are used to the so called re-recording or remastering treatment that is given to most songs. We are usually left with maybe a tiny tweak here and there, but in the end it basically is the same song. That is somewhat the case with this record because many of the songs are the same, but the clarity of them has been touched up. There are some notable differences in songs like “Superman”, “Cailin”, and “Rescue Me”. Still it’s nothing that will make you like this version of the song more than the original.
Really, though, is the re-recording of the songs going to make people who have been longtime fans of Unwritten Law buy this? No, their fans are going to want this because it contains their entire discography in one disc. Unwritten Law was easily one of the biggest and one of the best pop/punk bands in the 90’s. Although you will hear more about New Found Glory, Blink 182, and Green Day, Unwritten Law hold a place in many hearts for their unforgettable tracks like “Seein’ Red”, “Up All Night”, and “Teenage Suicide”.
So why should you buy The Hit List? If you are a fanatic for Unwritten Law this compilation encases the heart and soul of the band even though it’s not actually the original band. Also, this is a great way to introduce people to Unwritten Law who have never had the chance to encounter the band. You can suggest it to your little brother or sister who thinks Good Charlotte is the best band alive. Then tell them, “This is what good pop/punk sounds like.”
