In a scene where most bands are capable of only one or two solid albums in their career, Unearth stands tall. After having released one of the best metalcore albums of 2004 in The Oncoming Storm, Unearth take a shot at doing it again in 2006. III: In The Eyes of Fire holds up its end of the bargain and then some.

The men of Unearth reached deep this time to put together their most crushing album to date. The entire first half of the album is solid all the way through, packed with tracks like "Giles", "Sanctity of Brothers", and "This Glorious Nightmare". The later half, while not as memorable, maintains the fervor straight through to the end. "Unstoppable" and "So It Goes" are both highlights, as well as the closer, "Big Bear and the Hour of Chaos". In fact, the final track is the only place this album slows down at all. And you even hear a faint piano come in during part of the song.

As you track through this album, it's an amazing thing to hear a combination of mostly metal with just enough hardcore edge to create what "metalcore" should be, not what the scene throws at you. This isn't trendy, this is an actual combination of metal and hardcore. The intricate guitar interplay showcases the strong grounding in the metal world, but there is no shortage of thick, beefy breakdowns that any hardcore kid would eat up. Punishing is probably one of the best words to describe the overall tone of the album, and that is definitely complimentary.

There is but one complaint I have about this album. What's with the title? I don't need the three in front to tell me this is your third release. It's very pointless.

Nitpicking aside, this album is possibly the best metal album of the year. Unearth stepped it up again and they continue to show they aren't going to compromise themselves or their music to make a name in the industry. Hopefully fans can look forward to many more years of punishing metalcore from this band.

I'm with ya on this one, Jared. It might be a tad less impressive than The Oncoming Storm, but that's not that big of a deal as I view that album to be the epitome of what a metalcore album should be.

In my mind, these guys are the Gods of metalcore. Hands down.

This album way exceeded my expectations, but then again, they weren't that high. I'm just used to metal/metalcore bands breaking my heart after they give me an album I like.

While it's not nearly as great as SOC and TOS, I still like it. The instrumental track has to be the coolest song on the album.

I don't know how you can listen to their music and say that. They're not dynamic by any means, but they write some damn heavy stuff.

I thought the same thing when I first listened to the album.
