When word got out about pop heavy-hitters Chris Conley & guitarist David Soloway of Saves the Day, and Max Bemis & drummer Coby Linder of Say Anything teaming up for a music project, there was a decent amount of buzz amongst Say Anything and Saves the Day fans. And why wouldn’t there have been? In theory, the collaboration of two artists well-versed in writing catchy tunes sounds like it has all the potential in the world. Unfortunately, the partnership was poorly executed in so many ways.
Saves the Day have been under heat as their past few releases have been considered letdowns. A band that’s been around as long as they have are bound to release a few duds, but the issue is that they appear to be on a bit of a downward spiral. Say Anything’s latest release, In Defense of the Genre, wasn’t exactly applauded either. Even so, both bands have a significant amount of fans willing to eat up anything they release. Two Tongues isn’t going to be any different, but it also isn’t going to turn the head of anyone who isn’t already a fan of either band.
The first song released by the band, "Crawl," showed potential for being an intriguing-yet-lovely synthesis of two very different vocalists. It was more than enough to send chills down the collective back of diehard fans. Unfortunately it wasn’t a tell for what was in store on the full album; it was a beacon of false hope for the anxious public.
The debut (and presumably only) full-length from Two Tongues is a buffet of disappointment with about four notable pieces. “Crawl,” “Wowee Zowee,” and “Come On” are the few songs that actually stand out on first listen. The closer, “Even if You Don’t,” though cliché-ridden, is a memorable song worth more than a few listens. An EP would easily have sufficed, but instead we’re given an album that many of us will end up skipping through a majority of.
The music itself rarely ventures out of the realm of generic pop-punk. It’s perfect for people who can’t get enough of the genre, but it won’t do much for the rest of us. The vocal tradeoff between Bemis and Conley is intended to work based on their distinct styles, but unfortunately they don’t mesh together or create any sort of interesting parallels. Instead we’re left with what sounds like Saves the Day b-sides with Max Bemis joining in sporadically.
Two Tongues sounded brilliant in theory, but unfortunately the outcome was wholly disappointing. It’s an album that will generate buzz due to the interesting collaboration, not because of the actual music. As mentioned above, diehards will eat it up, but the rest of us will more likely than not forget about it fairly quickly.

I still want to check this out. I've heard decent thing everywhere else except this review. And this reviewer even seems to like a handfull of songs to the 1 seems a little odd to me.

Yeah from the review this seems like it'd be a 2.5 or something. Not a 1!

After listening to this there is no way in hell this is a 1. It's not great, but I think it's better than the last Say Anything by a great deal. It's worth keeping on my Zune.
Also, the Brand New comparison is terrible and feels pretty lazy to me. This is nothing like Brand New.
I liked it too, 1 star is too low.

I was trying to maintain at least a moderate amount of positivity and be courteous. But I do stand by my rating. I never, ever, ever, delete music off my computer and I ended up deleting this pretty quickly.
I did enjoy a few of the songs, but 4 out of 13 is a pretty terrible ratio of enjoyment. I guess my standards for a one-star album are just off base.
I don't think I added Brand New to the RIYL. I may have, but I don't recall doing that. Rick probably did because I only added two bands, which again is my fault.

Take the part of it sounding like Brand New down.

I really think my dislike for the album is contained. I really wanted to like it, but I just ended up feeling realyl let down. I'm bummed my opinion doesn't really reflect the general consensus though.
