Big Kiss Goodnight has all the subtly of a cinder block to the face, the self-assuredness meets grim determination meets street-level observations with a coat of grime packed on a boom-bap hip-hop release, and the kind of Christina Aguilera circa 2011 riffs that should have crowds ripping venues down across the country. Cue guitarist Sam Trapkin : “You know what it is—Trapped Under Ice, Chad Gilbert, and Paul Miner up in the studio recording the hardest TUI record to date, Big Kiss Goodnight. We hope ya’ll are familiar with the mosh pit because that's what this thing is about.”
Yeah, there are the occasional clean vocals that may catch people off guard, but trust me, no one’s going to confuse this release with For the Fallen Dreams’ latest. That’s about the closest thing you’ll get for a departure from Trapped Under Ice, but their explosive formula is not one that needed tampering with. If Secrets of the World was their coming-out party, they’ve still been kicking it adamantine and tight since all they had was a demo to their name (speaking of which, they’ve re-done “Reality Unfolds” from the demo, and instead of eye-rolling redundancy, it’s a perfect way to cap the record). Big Kiss Goodnight is not limited to merely being the next chapter in the TUI book, it’s a culmination of sorts, or at the very least the most accomplished of their bombastic thug-core slices of Baltimore street life.
Big Kiss Goodnight is fleshier than Secrets of the World and has greater track differentiation, but the main weakness of relative filler popping up prevents this review from becoming a press release. In the shadow of giants like “Jail,” “Outcast,” and “Time Waits,” “Dead Inside” and “Born to Die” (contrast this one with the huge opening of Secrets, “See God”) fade a little bit. Still no slouches when measured against what the field has to offer, these songs are emblematic of when TUI’s bare bones approach doesn’t quite hit its mark (previous examples include “Heavy Thoughts” and “Titus”).
In 2009, Secrets of the World cracked my year-end top ten. Two years later, another Trapped Under Ice record stands a very legitimate chance of doing the same, though they will once again have stiff competition from the likes of Mother of Mercy (who’s III also made an appearance), Foundation, and Most Precious Blood. With the bevy of notable tracks, bruise-inducing pit-fillers, and increased diversity, I think Big Kiss Goodnight will likely have the staying power that sometimes eludes albums that come out of the gate strong but ultimately become victims of the law of diminishing returns. Stay tuned.

I have to listen before I shit on it. I have a hard time listening to this band ever since the vocalist beat up one of his own fans in the audience...

The whole beating up a fan thing is completely miscued. I talked with Sam after it happened and some other peeps who know more of the inside story and it's not what everyone thinks.
