I have been a fan of Tenacious D for a while now and when I heard that Kyle Gass was doing a side project I couldn’t help but feel excited to see what kind of direction he would go in. For those unfamiliar with the D, Kyle is the bald headed, portly fellow. He is the straight man in the group and highly underrated as both a comedic performer and a guitarist. Enough talk of the D, though; lets discuss Trainwreck, who are a raucous group comprised of the live backing band for Tenacious D. They are essentially a rock mock band, in the vein of say Spinal Tap. Each member embodies those key elements that make true “rockers.” Most songs on this album carry the clichés of rock, these include notions of love and participating in “Brodeo’s”. The funny thing is amongst all of these beer guzzling rock songs are actually pretty interesting pieces of work.
The album kicks off very much like Thin Lizzy’s opus Jail Break, setting the stage for the band and detailing their intentions. Albeit Trainwreck's intentions are to fuck you silly, the opener “T.V. Theme” is a great way to start off the record. It is important to note that they definitely wear their influences on their sleeve. If you look at the album cover it is a blatant remake of Thin Lizzy’s Jail Break album. On any given track you can see hear the strains of hair metal riffs and good ol' southern jams. One of the more memorable tracks is “Milk the Cobra.” It has a very 80’s hair metal vibe with very odd flute flourishes thrown in for good measure. How can someone not like a song about “milking a cobra” until it “shoots its juice across your caboose”? This album is very simple in concept; Trainwreck are not trying to create something new, and they are taking elements of songs and blending them together. I think the best comparison to make is, unfortunately, to Tenacious D. You either get the humor or you don’t. I find lyrics such as, “I’ll dip my wrinkle stick in it,” to be hilarious. Those that over think this album will miss the comedic qualities. Having the lyrics in front of me while I listened to the CD was helpful and let me in on minor jokes that I would have missed otherwise.
Trainwreck are not going to last a long time or be talked about a lot when examining the annals of rock history. Sadly, they will always be overshadowed by Tenacious D and called the other band that Kyle Gass is in. It is a tough fact that will not change. I say this not to belittle Trainwreck or their efforts, but merely to state that they will always be just a joke band second best to Tenacious D. Once you can get past the shadow that is cast, you will find a pretty fun album. The band Trainwreck produced a solid outing that I will refer back to when I want to listen to some dirty rock n roll. Is it the best thing I have ever heard? No ,but what do you expect from a bunch of middle age dudes singing about B.L.T’s?
