Pro wrestler “Stone Cold” Steve Austin used to go by the motto “Don’t trust anyone.” The same can be said for artists who assemble and shortly after sign to a major label and release their debut. These bands usually have short longevity and most are signed on the crest of a falling trend. No so for Kelowna, British Columbia’s Thebleedingalarm. On their debut, Beauty in Destruction, they exhibit a maturity rarely seen in such a young group.

The title Beauty in Destruction could not describe this music any better. You’ll find many such dualities on this album. Madsen’s vocals go from crooning to straight up screaming his lungs out. Case in point, “Extinguish Ignite.” One listen to the track and you’ll understand. This dynamic doesn’t end there. You’ll hear it throughout the album and neither the screamed, nor the clean sung vocals, ever sound like they’re out of place. "Abatheau" is one crushing track, but it’s followed by the title track which lingers with its fading melody. Another trend on this album is a strange sense of atmospherics. It hides in the dark corners, but it is definitely tangible.

There’s not much bad I can say about Beauty in Destruction. The long outro at the end of the title track is more annoying than anything and warrants pressing skip. Other than that this album is solid. It’s rare to see this kind of maturity this early in a band’s career. Having heard rough version of some of the songs, I know how much of improvement they’ve made. If you happen to find Thebleedingalarm on tour in your town, do yourself a favor and check them out. Their energy will blow you away. The guys in Thebleedingalarm can be very happy at what they’ve accomplished and hopefully success is on the horizon.

This has been a guilty pleasure disc of mine. I've kept the pre-release I received in my car stereo most of the week before last. Fun stuff.
