A couple years ago the United States was infected by a horrible disease...not AIDS, not SARS, it was the "garage rock rebirth." We were inundated by several very dangerous strands of this virus-The Strokes,The Hives, and the deadliest of all, The Vines. Thankfully the initial stages of this disease only lasted a few months and before you knew it, things were seemingly back to normal. But like most viruses, this "garage rock rebirth" thing was just lying dormant. It was still in our system, it was just mutating and getting worse. Then, like that herpes virus you just can't shake, The Strokes came back with some album about being on fire and just as we were starting to get that under control The Vines are back with their latest "Winning Days."
The album starts off with the radio single "Ride with me" and immediately the red flag goes up...If this is the best song on the album, which most times the first single is, we're in BIG trouble. Their singer Craig Nicholls has a very distinct...howl. I use howl because it can't really be catagorized as singing. It lies somewhere between chainsmoking for 40 years and being kicked in the neck by a horse. As bad as the vocals are on this song, the amazing thing is that the musicianship is worse. The chorus consists of two notes and two words...Watch out Coldplay and Radiohead, your musicianship is being challenged (note the sarcasm). After a few songs of the garage rock sound The Vines magically turn into the highest paid Beatles cover band in the world. Think "Strawberry Fields" and "Lucy in the sky with diamonds" mixed with a throat cancer patient.
In all reality, the Beatles songs on this album are pretty good IF you're looking for a cover album. There is one really good song on this disc, the title track "Winning Days" but outside of that, this strain of the garage rock virus is a severe one. If you are a fan of good musicianship, originality, vocal abilities or talent I would recommend removing all sharp object before listening to this album because you may be tempted to use them...I'm considering a lawsuit against The Vines, their label, the distrobution company and the makers of my computer's speakers for making me lose an hour of my life...Thats 60 mins that I just can't get back. If you want in on this suit email me at Johnnyl@decoymusic.com. And if you experience any side effects from listening to this disease please contact a medical professional immediately.
