The Spill Canvas is the brainchild of 19 year old North Dakota native Nick Thomas and despite his young age, the music he makes is well beyond his years...and his geographical location.

I have to admit that I first heard the Spill Canvas thanks to the promotion machine that is one of our competitors who will remain nameless, but we all know who I'm talking about. Despite the auspicious beginning, I was truly impressed. Actually, impressed probably doesn't cover. I was blown away. The Spill Canvas is primarily an acoustic based outfit, but he's not limited by that as Dashboard was when they first started out. Nick is not afraid to add the electric, and when he does, it's cleverly done, as in "The Bracelet." It starts out as all acoustic, then slowly adds drums and then the electrics come in with a vengence. It transforms the song from a sleepy, acoustic ballad into a real rock song. The thing I like best about this album is the disc is the lyrical content. Most kids Thomas' age would be singing about getting stepped on by some evil chick, and while at times he sings about heartbreak, he does it in a tasteful, hopeful way, not the whole "oh woe is me" emo cliche. The lyrics here are hopeful and tells stories that you can buy into.

While I love this album, it is not without its drawbacks. First is that at times there are pitch problems. It seems that at points he tries to hard and thats when he struggles most. The other thing that keeps this album from being a 5 on the rating scale is that there are a few songs that I just can't get into. The albums that are great, in my opinion, you can listen to straight through, and unfortunately here, there are a few that I skip through every time.

All in all, this is about as close to a masterpiece as you can get from a teenager. His songwriting is unmatched and the only thing that I don't understand is why a "real" label hasn't swooped down and signed this guy. This is a great one guys, that I highly recommend picking up. Yes, I am a fanboy.
