I had never heard of The Project Hate MCMXCIX before being given this record so I have no history with the band's past work. To be honest I was kind of hesitant to really get too involved in a band called The Project Hate…. Surprisingly what I found was that their music is actually pretty good. The premise of the band is start with a melodeath base and mix in female vocals with death metal vocals and throw in some electronic and nu metal elements before stirring gently. You will find some pretty compelling moments strewn throughout the hour of music provided.

First off, their female vocalist is worthy of taking note as she expands on the whole metal front-woman cliché by adding a little bit of flare and power than I haven't heard from some of their other contemporaries. For lack of a better term this lady has pipes, and she is not afraid to use them. Musically the melodies that are found are kind of lackluster for such a powerful singer at the helm. They all tend to be very wandering and without direction. They also seem to flutter around and tend to be a bit all over the place. Even in saying this she still does an excellent job of standing out amidst all of the other talented members of the band. The guitar and drum work is spot on and leads to some really cool moments. The hooks in “They Shall All Be Witnesses,” for example, are excellent at times, full of melody and thick with distortion. The death metal vocals are done well throughout the album and tend to be used for the more rage filled lyrics.

My main complaint is the length of the songs. The Project Hate tries to pack in too much with each of their songs. One minute the dueling guitars are going and then halted for a string section or an electronic interlude. None of the songs are shorter than eight minutes, which is okay if the song is cohesive, but with this band you are getting a lot of disparate pieces thrown together. The long songs didn't really lead to boredom due to the writing lacking variety, but I would have cut up a few of the tracks to help out with the flow of the album since it is incredibly dense and can be difficult for those looking for a quick listen.

Overall this is still a good release, and if you are looking for a new band doing something a little bit different, than go pick up this album.

I've been a giant fan of this band for their entire career. I was blown away by their industrialized death metal when I first discovered them and continue to enjoy just about everything they do. This album is no exception.  Right now it's sitting in my top 10 of the year (yes, the year is young so it may not last) as it is, as you described, dense. If you're going into this album looking for a quick listen, you have the wrong mindset from the get-go. I think you should give it a few more solid, intent listens and really let it sink in.  This is quite a stellar album.

This album and band are decent compared to others in the respective sub-genre, but i would not sully the names of Sybreed and Katatonia on this mediocrity. I understand that its an RIYL, so i'm half serious.

Ever Forthright - Ever Forthright
Fallujah - The Harvest Wombs
The New Law - The Fifty Year Storm
The Mars Volta - Noqtourniqet
Aborted - Global Flatline
Spawn of Possession - Incurso
Crippled Black Phoenix - (Mankind)The Crafty Ape

Katatonia > Project Hate > Sybreed

Usually we agree on most things, so I find it kind of odd I really, really enjoy this band and you're only sorta on the fence about them.  Oh well.
