Over the last few years, Prosthetic Records has shown a knack for uncovering unique, young acts and turning them into big time players. Even more impressive is the diversity of the material that the label promotes - everything from the visceral thrashing metalcore of Year of Desolation to the mind bogglingly heavy Gojira to Yakuza's jazzed-out hardcore. Regardless, you know whatever the label releases is going to be a high quality endeavor. Pennsylvania's The Minor Times is yet another up and coming band carving their own niche on the Prosthetic label.
Melding the noisy catharsis of Unsane with Coalesce-styled grooves is a great place for any band to start. From this formidable launchpad, the band adds some of the distant post-hardcore textures of Transistor Transistor, most noticeably in the guitars on tracks like "This is a Fine Life You've Made For Yourself" and "Firespitter." The majority of the material herein stays somewhat concise with consistent running times around three and four minutes, leaving little room for filler, although when the band stretches its legs on the nearly 9-minute "This is the Blues" they showcase a more abstract side of their sound without sacrificing the energy of the tracks surrounding it.
Basically the whole of Summer of Wolves is well written and extremely well produced with a menacing Unsane-like guitar tone, but for some reason it still feels as though the band is holding something back. Throughout the album there is a feeling that at any moment the band will break out into something colossal, but they never quite make it there. Regardless, this is one of the best hardcore albums of the year.
