The Felix Culpa are a band that readers of Decoy Music may be familiar with from multiple “2010 Top 10” lists. Sever The Roots was released last year as a self-released album from the band (and we reviewed it here). The first time I ever heard of this band was when I saw them open for The Fall Of Troy. My friends and I were entranced by their ambient set, and we were shocked that none of us had heard of them, even though they were Illinois natives like ourselves. After constant nation-wide touring, the band finally signed to No Sleep Records which released this reissue of an already great album. In addition to the album, a separate three track CD, Bury The Axe, is included.
Not familiar with The Felix Culpa? Well, you should get started by listening to Sever Your Roots. This is an album that you’ll be revisiting constantly, finding new parts that amaze you every time through. The band’s hour and seven minute album finds its way around the musical spectrum with tracks that move from being loud and chaotic to quiet and calm. Songs like “Our Holy Ghosts” and “An Instrument” stick out on the album, showing the band’s ability to write quality tracks with a nice variation in parts throughout the songs.
The addendum EP, Bury the Axe, gives you a nice addition to the original album with three new tracks for old and new listeners. Clocking in at about 17 minutes, the EP provides a great insight into the new music that the band is working on for No Sleep Records. “Mallets,” an instrumental track, shows the bands ability to write great non-vocal passages. The other two tracks, “Towers” and “Spaces,” are both well written tracks that fans will love, picking up right where Sever Your Roots left off.
The combination of Sever Your Roots and Bury the Axe is something you do not want to miss. Both are amazing releases from a very talented band that should continue making a name for themselves with No Sleep Records. One can only imagine what else they have in store for listeners.

love love love this album. and i only got into them after seeing them on numerous top 10's from last year. not sure how i missed the original review, especially considering the RIYL it had. i've been listening to this a few times a week, and hopefully they'll come to the west coast some time soon
Illinois
i forgot that we already reviewed it. i guess i can justify my 4.5 star then cause i originally decided that .5 stars for the EP added to 4 for the CD would be a fair rating.
