Though obviously influenced greatly by cornerstone artists like The Jam, XTC, and The Stooges, The Features stampede through their major-label debut Exhibit A with some distinct flair and a superb sense of craft. Filler is kept to an absolute minimum here; songs are jam-packed with post-punk guitars, eerie synths, minimalist drums, and a drunken-but-composed snarl that one minute sounds sincere and cuddly but at the next sounds like a venemous animal poised to strike. The band manages to mix classic and modern artists together quite nicely -- "Me and the Skirts" is kind of like The Stooges meets The Murder City Devils, and "Blow it Out" screams Peter Gabriel and Kings of Leon. Highlights here are definitely the title track "Exhibit A" and the Talking Heads-esque "Leave it Behind." While Exhibit A isn't absolutely necessary in today's musical world, it definitely is a welcome addition to a cluttered-but-who-gives-a-fuck world.
