The debut LP from the curiously named Dayton, OH sextet, The Devil Wears Prada, entitled Dear Love: A Beautiful Dischord is among the best of the year in its genre. The band finds a formula that works and sticks to it with their singing/screaming vocal duo, the shredding breakdowns, and eerie sustained keyboards. Make no mistake, on Dear Love this band rocks harder than Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway ever could.

The album released on the Victory Records subsidiary, Rise Records, is largely quality metalcore. It consists of re-recordings of their 2005 EP, Patterns of a Horizon and a couple of new songs. The growl of lead singer Mike Hranica combined with the higher singing of guitarist Jeremy DePoyster presents something that, although not new, still works when utilized properly. It gets a little worn out towards the end, but it's the especially stellar first half that really gets me behind these guys. With the songs "Dogs Can Grow Beards All Over" and "And the Sentence Trails Off..." The Devil Wears Prada exhibit something that so few bands in this genre do: the ability to create catchy metalcore. The album has a good flow to it as most of the songs sound largely similar to one another but still show a hint of individuality. Lyrically they fall in the vein of The Chariot and Underoath with their Christian based, sometimes preachy, lyrics.

Coming out of the metalcore genre, a genre that has far more misses than hits, The Devil Wears Prada are one of the few hits. They feature all the strengths of a good metalcore band and infuse it with their own unique composition in each song. I think this band displays great potential with this release. In music that can be a dangerous word to use, but I still look forward to seeing this band progress. With Dear Love: A Beautiful Dischord, The Devil Wears Prada are easily the best band since Dead Poetic to come out of an unexpectedly booming music scene in Dayton.

You know, as much flack as this CD has been getting, I found myself really enjoying it. Reminds me of really early Haste the Day with some keyboards and more aggression in place of built up song structures. I think they've been given a bad rap by too many people.

really early Haste the Day

they're not old enough to have an early period. haha. they are still in their early period. but i guess it is pretty rare that a metalcore band sticks around for more than a few months.

Early days = their first EP which came out in 2002, nearly 5 years ago. I would consider a band with 5 years experience to be able to have an early, mid, and current stage of development. Shit, I know I changed a lot in 5 years so why can't a band?

These guys go/went to the high school that my dad teaches at and that I graduated from. The same one that 12 Tribes came from. Northmont High School is the home of metalcore.

Recommending: Anberlin, Interpol, Chamberlain, House of Heroes
