We’ve all got our favorite albums, and we’ve all heard some that make our ears bleed. Strangely enough, I’m more disappointed in a bland album that doesn’t have anything new or interesting to offer than I am with a downright terrible album. Deplorable, hellish spawn like Brokencyde or Jeffree Starr at least awaken some emotions, whether they be simple distaste or the overwhelming need for vitriolic death threats. Unfortunately, The Casting Out’s newest album The Casting Out!!! (Notice the eclamation points? It isn’t just self-titled. It’s self-titled!!! Yeah!) can’t make me drum up enough emotion to feel one way or another about it.

This makes me feel sad for vocalist Nathan Gray. After a stellar career as the lead vocalist for scene godfathers Boysetsfire, the singer started The Casting Out because he claims that there was nothing else he was good at. His pedigree, talent and unwillingness to do anything else should ensure something good, but it all just feels vanilla from the first track all the way to the final note.

Oddly enough, especially considering the rating I’ve given this album, I wouldn’t claim any of this album is bad per se. The guitars are all in tune, there are no stupid electronic breakdowns, no silly, overly ambitious children’s choirs or anything of that sort. Instead what we get is a really bland imitation of a punkier, more straightforward Samiam. What that means is that there are a lot of power chords, octave leads, progressions you’ve heard before, upbeat drums, gruff yet melodic vocals, and not much else. While many bands can pull this off, like Latterman or Jawbreaker, The Casting Out does it with such a lack of songwriting prowess and urgency that absolutely nothing impresses itself on the listener. I can’t even say that it feels like a waste of potential because, honestly, there isn’t anything here grabbing enough to tell me that the band could write anything to rise above sub-local-opener status.

A teacher knows the names of really bad kids and the really good kids, but the C students? They’ll be forgotten once the semester is over. So, The Casting Out!!!, I hope you enjoyed your time in class, because once I’m done grading your paper, I probably won’t think about you ever again.

I'm tempted to listen to this solely because you say it's so disinteresting.

...Does that defeat the purpose of this review?

Is it weird that I feel the exact same way?

Too old to bother, too young to give a shit.

I'll track it down simply because I love Nathan Gray's voice.  I thought their last album was pretty decent.  I still miss Boysetsfire, though.

I totally agree with this. Actually didn't realise they had a new one coming but yeah, it might make me want to listen to BSF instead.

They had an exclamation mark in the title for their last album too. Just saying.

Honestly I think, this is a pretty cool record. It's a cool record, because its against the flow.I have grown up in the rock& metalscene and I used to love it. Now I'm sick of most of the ppl, because they became so narrow minded.Everything has to be harder and faster or better. Its like the fucking flavour of the week.new metal has been so revolutionary then it was metalcore , hardcore and now its grindcore.currently everybody is on that grindcoretrip, because its the hardest ppl can get by now.and everybody who's not in it is out.Seriously nearly every recordI boughtduring the last 4 yearsboredme after listen to it a few times.it's all about moshpit breakdowns, drums that are so fast that you cant even here any rhythm anymore or fucking boring10 minute guitarsolosin every single song on a record.everything sounds sterilized and synthesized.but I have grown up with rock n roll too. and one greatthing is that rocknroll bands sound live on stage exactly like they do on cd.it's a feeling. This is what many other and newbands can't offer me anymore. But the casting out can.I think this record represents them as live band.for that reason it does not have to be recorded perfectly.all those discussions about boysetsfire and the casting out are sostale .seriously ifyou have the feeling to start sth new, because it comes to aday whereyou are stuck at some point - why not?if s.o is sick of singing about revolution and anger and wants to do something new, in order toexpresswhat isreally on his/her mind- why not?if that means to found a new band, why mock him about that?i think the most important thing to a real musican is that he or shecan stand up forhis/her music and ideas and means it for 100 %.I can only guess...maybe nathan just simply wants to have more fun and rock n roll in his life.its not only about million of fans and sold records .there are many bands who feel like they are the top of the mountain.for sure boysetsfire had been succesfull and still are, but the casting out are so down to earth and they give fans a feeling of being a part of it and they give them a chance to keep in touch with'em .they are real and this is what the lyrics are.lyrics coming straight from the heart and mind.and they are honest.the lyrics are honest, the sound is honest, those guys are honest.sometimes less is more.sometimes there is no needfor crazy guitarriffs or insane fast drumkicks.I have seen many bands live in huge halls, playing in front of thousand of ppl and they had been really good for sure.and i have listened to insane and the most perfect recorded CDs e.g tool -10000 days. But no concert and no record makes me smile so easilylikethe ones of the casting out. whenIlisten tothis recordI don't have to think about work or problems for a few minutes. And this is not the view of a crazy fan.I just have seen them live a few months ago, because of my job.and from my personal view as an audio engineer and musican:I think they are cool. nathans voice is very specialand they had my full attention from the first secondI saw andheard them.If you love boy sets fire listen to boy sets fire if you love the casting out listen to them.and if you love both...way better.but you can't compare.and may be(!) s.o who is playing in a totally different genre is not the right one to judge a band or a recordwhich transports totally different ideas.
greeting and sorry for wrong spellings ;)

I can't believe I read that entire post, my eyes feel funny. Paragraphs would be nice.

Also, I wouldn't totally disagree with the review but think this is way better than a 1.5/5. I'm a bit biased becauseI love his voice but I still think this sounds decent after a couple of listens.

I forgot to mention in my review that this band seems to be pretty huge in Europe. I'm glad some people are enjoying them.

Man... this is so just middle of the road.  I formed like no real attachment to any of the songs.  What's worse is it feels like the band is just phoning it in for a chunk of the album.  *Sigh*  Such a let down.
