Kyle Bishop, as most of you may or may not have known, used to be in Grade. Now, I am not familiar with Grade whatsoever so I really had no expectations before listening to this record. But there was a buzz going around about Bishop's new band, The Black Maria, I figured it couldn't hurt to see what they were all about. I can now safely say The Black Maria is definitely one of the better bands on the Victory roster.
Right off the bat "The Memento" starts with hypnotizing keyboards that slowly build up to a barrage of guitars, bass and drums. Moving into the verse the pace slows down a bit and picks right back up into the chorus. Beautiful, powerful, and most importantly, head-bang worthy. This one song pretty much summarizes the rest of the disc. From the haunting melodies of "Organs," to the piano ballad "The Lines We Cross," and everything in between, The Black Maria takes you on a ride of never ending melancholy. The music is amazing in itself, but what really makes The Black Maria shine are the vocals. From beautiful melodies, to brutal screaming and the occasional shouting, Chris Gray is nothing short of amazing.
It's been awhile since a band has made me feel the way The Black Maria does. That feeling you get when you actually connect with the music you're listening to. The good definitely outweighs the bad here. Intense, emotional, and gut wrenching, "Lead Us To Reason" will leave you speechless.
