The All-American Rejects' rise to fame was notably fast and aided by their ability to write sugar sweet and catchy pop songs that resonate in a listener’s head in a powerful way. Having been a household name for several years now, The All-American rejects have quite a few fans they need to continue to captivate and impress. Fortunately for them, they’ve attained a loyal fan base that will stay by them in a time where staying power and ardent fans aren’t the easiest things to retain.
When the World Comes Down finds the band on a more serious note, leaving a fair amount of their fun-natured songwriting in the dust. It’s a bold move for a band whose fan base expects simple, upbeat music, and it’s a move that unfortunately doesn’t quite pay off. Their lightheartedness remains intact, but their foray into a new territory of sound finds them wandering down an already beaten path instead of exploring and crafting something new.
Their first single off the new release, “Gives You Hell,” is catchy, but it’s also irritatingly repetitive to the point where it will clearly have some trouble retaining staying power. Songs like “Damn Girl” and “Another Heart Calls” have the potential to make for good singles, but it may be preferable for the listener to instead download via iTunes these two tracks along with “Real World,” and do without the rest of the album.
When The All-American Rejects released their self-titled album, their timing was spot on. It was a time when the world was devoid of pop untainted by the feeling of manufactured sound. “Swing, Swing” was an instant hit, and the rest was smooth sailing for the band. Over the years, they’ve lost relevance and footing on the slippery slope that is the ever changing popular music scene. We’re blessed with the ability to pick and choose from a staggering amount of bands, and The All-American Rejects can’t seem to keep up. If they release another fun album hearkening back to their prior sound, I’ll be listening. Until then, though, I’ll have to get my pop fix elsewhere. Diehard fans seem to be pleased with When the World Comes Down, but the average listener may end up feeling a bit alienated.

I didn't like this release when I first heard it but it really grew on me. I like the arrangements within the songs, as well as the added dynamics with the violin and piano. Move Along had better singles but as an album, I think this is a step up for them. I can see why people don't like it though because they're not really progressing as a band at all.
