Terrible Things is the newest super group to show up on the pop rock scene. Consisting of Fred Mascherino (Taking Back Sunday), Andy Jackson (Hot Rod Circuit), and Josh Eppard (Coheed & Cambria), they may seem like an unlikely match coming from different rock genres. With support from Universal Motown, this band has their sights set for a bigger audience than their previous bands. They know how to rock with plenty of catchy riffs, big choruses, and the key to a good rock group: lots of energy.

The album starts with an intro track, showcasing a nice transition from an acoustic guitar and violin to a driving drum beat with some guitar chords. The intro immediately goes into “Revolution,” a driving rock song that's catchy and provides a great opening for the album. Filled with some driving guitar riffs and a chorus that can easily get stuck in your head, this song provides high hopes for the rest of the album. “Up At Night” continues the album with a more pop sounding track that sounds a lot like a Jimmy Eat World song. “Lullaby” is a softer track that starts with some acoustic guitar that picks up after a bit. The most notable part of the song is the vocal range that Fred Mascherino shows off. He has the perfect vocals for the genre that the band is aiming to take over, so it only makes the songs better.

“Conspiracy” is one of the album's gem tracks. Driven by some pop sounding verses and a huge rock chorus, this song is the definition of a great pop rock track. The bridge of the song makes it even better, bringing the volume down to a more quiet level slowly building up with gang vocals and increasing guitar volume then bringing the song to a huge chorus outro. “Wrap Me Up” is the first song to feature Andy Jackson doing main vocals. The change is welcome, providing a completely different vocal styling. While the song may sound a bit different from the rest of the album, it makes you wonder why they wanted to change the vocals for only a few select songs instead of doing multiple songs with Jackson on vocals. “Been Here Before” is another soft track that features acoustic guitars with violin and piano accompaniment. This track is another gem, providing an emotion filled vocal performance from Mascherino.

“Not Alone” is a heavily Foo Fighters influenced track that provides a great driving rock sound with more vocals from Jackson that show that he can just as easily be a great vocalist for the band's genre as Mascherino. “The Arsonist's Wife” starts off soft and continues to a great chorus and some nice guitar riffs throughout the song, making it a great final track for the album, leaving listeners wanting more from the band soon.

Terrible Things is sure to be a rising act in mainstream rock in the months to come. The band has plenty of potential and an unmatchable amount of energy that can be heard in their music. This album is worth listening to over and over again, something mainstream rock has been lacking recently. Terrible Things has provided a strong debut that can only lead to good things for this band.

good album, but definitely not a 4.5.

Like newer Jimmy Eat World records, this band just bores me, which is disappointing. I don't think Fred is a very unique-sounding vocalist, and the music is kind of pedestrian. There's nothing I can sink my teeth into. It's competent music; it's a step up from butt rock, but that's about it.

i really didn't have any problems with this album besides not featuring Andy Jackson as much and the fact that it wasn't entirely original.  i did, however, find that this album was a pretty good debut from these guys.  i also thought it was very accessible to a general audience, but i'm guessing (from the comments already) that decoy isn't going to agree.

I've never even heard of this band, but after just listening to a couple of tracks including "Conspiracy", I have to ask: do you really think this album is almost perfect?

i guess if you want to base that on two "off" reviews, then go for it.  just because i don't like to look too deep into music doesn't mean you guys need to shit on my opinions.

andy jackson is pretty much the scene equivalent of moses. fred, on the other hand, sucks. this is why death in the park is better than terrible things, and hot rod circuit needs to get back together.
