Hailing from Long Island, New York, Stray From The Path are the hardcore front-runners for diverse young label Sumerian Records. Signed in 2008, the band has released two records on the label and is now releasing number three. 2008's Villains and its follow-up, the next year's Make Your Own History, both played a role in scoring the band opening slots on big name tours and reeling in a number of young fans on the fringe of metalcore and hardcore. Their signature sound takes a bit of a spin about for this album but seems to hold itself together relatively well at the end of the day.

Ever inviting a malleable, quirky groove into their take on metallic hardcore, Stray's fifth album intros with a typical hype track and heads straight away into the first single "Death Beds." Featuring Jonathan Vigil of The Ghost Inside, the track is home to a less familiar breakdown embracing style than what the band is known for. Sure to be the bane of many fans who pride themselves on not listening to typical "Sumeriancore," I have a sneaking suspicion that the ones writing the music don't have anything to say. Either way, the song is a decent mesh of the two styles and listeners can expect more as the album progresses. Heading on to tracks like "Bring It Back to the Streets" and "iMember," there is, sound-wise, a more natural progression and the best sound yet for the band. The former is one of the top songs on the record, expertly commanded through multiple facets of the group's sound with the help of Comeback Kid vocalist Andrew Neufeld. "iMember" also brings a fierce groove and provides you with another solid listen.

Heading on through a second rather forgettable single we reach the last stretch of music for the album and the most solid so far. "Center of Attention" and "The Laughing Man" sound like stripped down Make Your Own History tracks, which is by no means bad considering it complements their more streamlined sound. "The Escape Artist" is a great track wrapped together by the band's rarely heard from drummer Dan Bourke. It flows smoothly out of a drum showcase and into the album's foreboding closer, "Crashing Down." Though the most out of place on the album, the band handles the brooding '90s alt-rock / hardcore fusion as well one could. The track works oddly well existing between the group's two main influences and is able to hold its own as a closer with lyrics professing for a need to be home.

Though it seems the band has taken a slight turn towards a more commercial sound, the solid foundation of anger-driven, high energy music that drew in fans to begin with still remains. Once you get past some of the less interesting tracks there are still a number of great ones left to take in making the stylistic departure much more bearable. Rising Sun is sure to get the group's name out to places it couldn't have made it before, and their late 2011 tour with The Acacia Strain, Terror, and Harm's Way is sure to keep the momentum up. If you're a current fan of the band, absolutely grab Rising Sun and enjoy what it has to offer. For those new to the outfit, however, I would have to recommend Make Your Own History.

ya i agree it isn't as good as make your own history.  i dig it for the most part though.  i'm agreeing with 3.5 after my first few listens, but i have this feeling it will grow on me like their last cd did.

I liked all of the tracks from the last album, whereas there are a few on this one that I don't like. This does sound more diverse overall, though.

Yeah, sometimes Bill is just puzzling. Like he chooses certain bands to hate "just because".

Because it's fuckin Bury Your Dead, THAT'S WHY! I'm not saying this is terrible, it's just a big fucking MEH. Funny how y'all say I "hate" this when all I did was post a pic of a dude yawning. I've built quite the reputation. haha.

I listened to this album... and then got on with my business. Tons of other bands are doing this and doing it better.

So I took my time getting around to this album. After listening to it today... damn, this IS pretty catchy. Easily the best work this band has done. The only part I didn't like was the song with Cory Brandan. I don't think he fits in with this band's style.

This shit is so fun to listen to. It's mindless like BYD, but I don't hate the lyrics.
