Bands lose members left and right. Oftentimes, the impact is fairly minimal. When a frontman or crucial founding member chooses to leave, however, the story unfolds a little bit differently. Fans become dismayed and divided, and the internet blogosphere bursts at the seams with baseless speculation. When Sonny Moore chose to leave From First to Last, it was no different. Why would someone quit a band that was doing so well and seemingly on the cusp of major success? It’s a question Moore will probably be asked for the rest of his career, but the answer is very obvious to anyone who takes the time to listen to the music on Gypsyhook: his head was in an entirely different place.
For months, Sonny has teased his fans with demos and remixes, promising that a legit release was on the way. When he announced he was entering the studio to begin recording a full-length, a label announcement could not have followed too long after. What fans weren’t expecting was for that label to be as big as Atlantic Records. The announcement was met with a collective “huh?” but fortunately also with a strong level of excitement.
Gypsyhook, Sonny’s first EP as a solo artist, holds no surprises. It carries the dance-vibe that he’s begun to adopt more and more, and it carries the remixes electronic artists are so very fond of. The first three tracks are the main focus of the EP, as they’re the only non-remix tracks on the album. "Gypsyhook," the title track, starts things off with a simple yet thoroughly catchy beat. Soon after, the song leaps to a more intricate sound, evolving into an overwhelmingly danceable tune. The danceability is what truly seals the deal with this release. Every track on Gypsyhook begs the listener to stop what they’re doing and dance.
Remixes often have the stigma of being just filler tracks unworthy of a listen, but when you have artists like The Toxic Avenger and LazrTAG remixing, there’s reason to be excited. Dan Sena’s remix of "Mora" is decent but a little too repetitious to invite repeated listening. The DMNDays remix of "Gypsyhook" is probably the most likable of the bunch, but they’re all certainly worth a listener’s time.
The final track is by far the most interesting of the entire release. Fans of Japanese music know how much Japanese artists like to record the occasional song in English. Moore decided it would be a good idea to reverse that idea and record "Mora" in Japanese. Admittedly, the concept may be nothing more than an interesting novelty to some, but there are certainly fans out there who will appreciate and thoroughly enjoy it.
For better or worse, Gypsyhook is different. It certainly won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but one thing that can certainly be agreed on is that Sonny has found his own niche. He’s created a style that’s truly original and that’s quite an accomplishment given the current music climate.

This was a good review and made me check out the myspace page. I was never a FFTL fan and I like Daft Punk and Justice. But this...
It sounds like Claudio Sanchez singing to a bunch of fake tanner at a Long Island guido bar.
And that cover art is atrocious.

I have to say, I think I like this more than I liked most of what From First To Last did, but not by much. It's pretty bad that he sounded like both Akon and Phil Collins at separate points during the song Mora.
Every time I see something screech across the floor, and latch onto some guy's neck, and he screams and tries to pull it off, I have to laugh, because man, what is that thing?

Whoa whoa whoa... what's wrong with Phil Collins?!?!?!?!?!?!?! I hated FFTL and I definitely hate this garbage.

Well I've only heard the first two songs and I'm not sure if it's the Hispanic in me, but I love that new breakdown/dance hall beat in Mora. It made me smile that Sonny would even try to pull something as random as that knowing his background. But I'll comment on the album once I've heard it in full.

THANK YOU!
I couldn't get through 30 seconds of this garbage, so I think I'll just comment now.
This is really yucky.

The fact he's going on tour with Hollywood Undead says a lot. I said it once and I'll say it before....I can't stand his voice, unless there's some screaming to counter that pussyness sound. I would only recommend this to my enemies. The only thing he has going for him is having Nico Vega in his top friends.

Nico Vega actually sings on Sonny's upcoming full-length, actually.

That song I might have to check out then. She has more of manly, aggressive voice than Sonny which may help.

I was actually waiting to hear from you, Aaron. Glad I'm not the only one!

I like it. I wish there was more original tracks, but I guess that's the purpose of this EP; to get the word out. I'm not sure I'd see him on tour if there isn't a sick line-up with him. I'm still a little skeptical until he puts out a full-length.

Daft punk and Justice were just compared to this crap.......
Is he barfing on the album cover? If so, he's pretty much accurately describing his own music. Zing!

Why does Decoy have Dant Rambo review this when everyone knows he is a fan of Sonny? IMO this review is biased and this EP is awful.
Fort Bragg, CA
I feel very certain that you'd have a tough time backing that statement. Just what is biased about this review? Did I give it five stars and sing nothing but praises?

If you did, then we'd have to change your name to Alex Davies... who appears to have fallen off the face of the earth...
