As soon as I began listening to “In Loving Memory of”, the first track off of So They Say’s second release Antidote for Irony, I was initially reminded of a watered down version of The Receiving End of Sirens. The rest of the song, as I assumed it would, confirmed my initial assumption. The chords and riffs used are derivative for the most part. Dual guitars, fluid vocals, and catchy lyrics filled the first few tracks, but something was still missing. In order to describe the first half of the CD, you could distill So They Say down to simply driving tempos and rhythms, molded around the vocals of Joseph Hamilton and David Schroeder. Despite the cookie-cutter riffs found left and right on this CD, the band brings it in the vocal melody department.

While the instrumental half of So They Say may not be exactly up-to-par, they have their catchy vocals to make up for it. They'll blow half of your typical, run of the mill, alt-rock bands out of the water. After listening to many of their songs, I sung the vocal melodies throughout the day, which on led to making me want to go back to my stereo and play the songs on repeat again, singing along while basking in their melodies. Just listen to “In Essence We Are Falling” and you'll know what I am talking about. Hamilton and Schroeder sing “I felt pain, I lost my patience, I heard a voice say overrated and by myself I figured out the truth,” so appealing that I couldn’t shake them. It definitely turned me onto them after giving the CD a good three listens. First impressions aren't always correct, with this CD demonstrating it perfectly.

I was also let down, but then again I wasn't really expecting too much either.

I am too mild with my reviews. Nothing is outstanding, and nothing is shitty.

Loved it!

I especially have a thing for "Act like you're listening, Till it's your turn to talk".

I think it's fresh and emotional. They have a good sound which will only improve as time goes on. :D
