Disappointing is a word that comes to mind with many of the new albums I have heard so far this year. So many highly anticipated records have come and gone without much fanfare. Writing a good record is one thing, but writing a good record with staying power is definitely something worth applauding. Sleepaway is one of the few bands that have done just that.
The opening track, “Nice Shoes, Hollywood!” is the perfect introduction to what this band is all about. The first few notes of the keyboard chime in while the soft, welcoming vocals follow suit. Shimmering guitars add a nice rich texture to each track as well. Sleepaway manages to meticulously craft a magnificent pop-rock album.
The only downfall I found with Sleepaway's debut record is that once you stop paying attention, the songs all start to sound the same. Not to say that that’s a bad thing, but it’s a common misstep so many bands have had a hard time overcoming. But the high points far surpass the low points on this album. I highly recommend picking this one up.
