1986 marked the year hell itself was released into the music industry. The metal scene had no idea what it was in for… but Slayer had no care. Reign in Blood is responsible for turning Slayer into the biggest thrash metal band of all time and for good reasons. Regarded by critics as one of the most influential metal albums of all time, Slayer used Reign in Blood as a starting point to a journey that now seems to be never ending. At this time, twenty three years later, Slayer has released World Painted Blood and are using it to shut the mouths of all those who have doubted them within the last decade or so.

World Painted Blood begins with the title track and fiercely kicks you in the ass as soon as the minute long intro is over. Immediately, Araya belts out some rapid fire banter about the usual Slayer topics over-top the relentless Hanneman / King combo all the while Lombardo is still showcasing why he is and should always be the drummer for the band. The track is reminiscent of 80’s Slayer and is unquestionably the perfect song to start the album with. “Unit 731” and “Snuff” are perfect examples of why this band released their 1996 punk-covers album Undisputed Attitude. Every second of each song has the fast punk vibe that Slayer is known for occasionally incorporating, and it definitely makes for an excellent listen. The guitar work on “Snuff” is impeccable and ridiculously fast; the guitar gods of Slayer have outdone themselves on this one. Next, “Beauty Through Order” slows things down a bit. With lyrics about drinking blood for the sake of vanity, Araya furthers the notions of him having a warped sense of thinking. At around 2:25 Slayer breaks it down for us, adding a bit of an eerie vibe to accommodate the 17th century lyrics. Up until this point in the album, the attention has been directed on Hanneman and King. Their speed and unsullied axe-work is always at the forefront of Slayer discussions, however Dave Lombardo demonstrates some of the hastiest and almost unfathomable drum work on “Public Display of Dismemberment” that it is sure to steal the limelight.

Peculiar as hell seems to be the theme for this album. Sure there are your typical religious and politically-charged ensembles like “Americon” and “Not of This God,” but the rest of the album has a sinister vibe to it. “Playing With Dolls”, “Psycopathy Red” and “Human Strain” all maintain menacing yet harmonic and crunchy guitar riffs. These three tracks seem to sound like Slayer from the Seasons…era. Packed with lyrics to keep you saying to yourself “What the...” Araya keeps your head spinning. Stuffed with uncharacteristically ominous style, World Painted Blood also holds one other imperative detail for the landscape of this album… production. Working with Rick Ruben seems to help the band keep the sound of this album pure and raw, yet furthering the conception that these guys are trying to touch base with their older material. All in all, the production quality is perfect.

So what more do you write about a band who really need no review? Honestly? Slayer has been doing this thing called metal longer than most of these generic metal bands nowadays could ever dream of doing it. So what is the final assessment of this album? Just go out and buy the damn thing. Seriously, if you need to sit there and ask yourself whether or not you want to hear this album, I hope Kerry King himself shows up at your doorstep, kicks the door in and staples earphones to your sorry-ass skull. Slayer is here to reassure the masses that they are going to stay at the top of the metal scene and World Painted Blood is the cement that holds this fact in the foundation.

Slayer are one of those go to bands when I need a quick fix. My only problem with Slayer is that Tom believes in GOD. That's just too much for me.

You shouldn't forget the importance of entertainment.

Me too. Everyone thinks that because of "God Hates Us All" and every other song like that one, that they hate God. That's not true. Tom mostly writes about his disgust with society and the way they have turned everything to shit...therefore God being disgusted by what they have done.
