Well folks, this review was a long time coming. A late release of 2003 (November), this Slayer "greatest hits" package comes heavily equipped with thrash metal anthems, live tracks, demos, etc. Slayer has wowed fans for over 15 years giving us many, many metal anthems which we've headbanged to, drank to, and partied hard to. Slayer has been and will always be one the heaviest hitters in the music industry today; especially in the metal community. Slayer has paved the way for many bands today. Slayer has surpassed many bands in the climbing the ladder to towards metal heaven and hell and could be crowned as the best metal band to walk and play on the face of earth; big words, but words which I truly believe.
Soundtrack To The Apocalypse is truly one of the greatest "greatest hits" compilations of the new millennium. It shows us how the seed known as Slayer was planted and how it fluorished and sprouted into the black rose of tremendous power and fury which we as fans have come to love and embrace dearly. All through out these amazing discs, we hear the distinctive quickness, pulse pounding, heart racing sound that only Slayer can produce; thrash metal at its purest and truest essence. As the years have been very good Slayer, Slayer has been very good to us fans; treating us to a bevy of classic albums and songs. Amongst the numerous jewels found in this package, we find some true "cult classic" songs: South Of Heaven, Raining Blood, Mandatory Suicide, Dead Skin Mask, Stain Of Mind, and War Ensemble as well as a lot more! Through Slayer, we can and able to relive the true glory years of thrash metal. The vibe which radiates from these songs just call out to the animal in all of us and yearns us to let our primal side run free, roam high, and ravage whatever lies in our path/s. I am truly blown away at the magnitude of Slayer's Soundtrack To The Apocalypse; the sheer intensity of it as a whole and of each song itself is incredible. To truly feel what the Slayer nation is, and the great appeal of everything Slayer is pretty much contained in this "greatest hits" package. Along with the audio discs contained in this package, there is also a dvd which not only lets you hear Slayer's greatness, but allows you to see it!
Slayer has helped me to rekindle that part of my youth where I was not really exposed to metal. My youth was filled with music, but not metal. Re-introducing myself to Slayer a few years back has helped me to understand what true, good metal is. The intensity which Slayer brings to the proverbial table each and every time is more ominous, powerful and great. With a band like Slayer, praise has become second nature to them. To truly praise Slayer is to listen to their masterpieces of destruction and to chant along while head-banging to their intense metal anthems.
To put it simply, Slayer is a god-like form for us mortals to engulf, embrace, and love. I truly, truly recommend that any music fanatic pick this up ASAP! I would suggest getting the 5-disc version; it might be more expensive, but well worth it (comes w/a bonus audio disc). Alright kids, time for you all do something productive, procreation maybe? Sleep tight, let those bed bugs bite and remember: the shadow in the corner of your room w/a lit cigarette isn't me, it's Big Bird.
