There are few that still wave the tattered and torn death metal banner with such vigor and tenacity as Tampa’s Six Feet Under. The pot loving quartet is going on 15 years strong in the scene and Death Rituals brings the count of their studio albums to the double digit mark. An impressive feat, considering the amount of weed these dudes must go through on a daily basis.

Amidst bong rips and tokes, Chris Barnes and company have consistently released quality “death ‘n’ roll”, down-tempo death metal that can only be truly appreciated by the appropriately chemically imbalanced. Fans will know what to expect on Death Rituals: buzzsaw guitars that drone and crack, gore-obsessed lyrics, vocals that sound like they’ve been recorded through a cheese grater underwater, and enough double bass to shake your nappy head full of dreads at.

“Death by Machete” kicks things off with a slightly progressive intro before Barnes’ guttural growl cuts through the smoke and haze while Greg Gall’s steady work on the skins brings the headbanging to full tilt. “Eulogy for the Undead” contains one of the album’s well placed guitar solos while “Bastard” briefly flirts with a southern tinged driving riff that somehow works. “None Will Escape” could be a dead ringer for Barnes' ex-outfit Cannibal Corpse while the plodding, methodical “Seed of Filth” is quintessential SFU. “Shot in the Head” starts with a meant-to-be-serious menacing voicemail message that is good for a chuckle and sums up SFU’s career in five good minutes: take them too seriously and you will hate Six Feet Under, but for no frills groovy death metal that makes for surprisingly good background music, look no further. “Murder Addiction” ends the album on a strong note and shows that these dudes, though old enough to be your dad, still have a lot of metal left in them. For those still listening, Death Rituals is a worthy addition to the band’s already extensive catalogue.

If i'm going to listen to this type of more "classic"(?) death metal, then i would rather hear suffocation, death, dismember or malevolent creation. I have never liked SFU and i dont think that i ever can.

I'm not really going to comment on the band or this album, mainly because I've never been able to get into SFU or Cannibal Corpse or any similar band. As much as I tend to enjoy just about anything metal related, there is such a tiny amount of variation in what bands like SFU put out that I just can't sit through an entire album. I know a lot of what I listen to can be seen as one dimensional (ie: all prog is just guys masturbating with their instruments), but there seems to be an inordinate amount of conformity to a set template in SFU's songs.

Find me EVERYWHERE:

Chris Barnes is one of the pioneers of this style of music, Why would he change what has worked so well for so long now? Music like this has its place and time and sounds a little tired at times but so does every other band people glorify. I'm not the biggest 6fu fan myself but his work with CC and 6fu will always have its place in history.
