When reading over the press release for the Sick Puppies new album, Dressed Up As Life, one might be impressed, but while it may look good on paper, the band has to actually sound like what is says. Like most job interviews, you try your hardest to impress the employer hoping that you’ll land the position. You pick your best qualities and execute them to show what you are capable of. So, what did the Sick Puppies do to wow the people at Virgin Records? Basically, all they did was shoot a very successful video for their lead single, “All the Same”. After millions and millions of YouTubers’s checked it out, Virgin came knocking and they were handed a contract. Even though the video was made with good intentions, didn’t Dave Matthews Band do the same thing years ago with their video for “Everyday”?
If there is one thing we know about internet sensations it's that most of them turn out to be duds. Tila Tequilla and Hollywood Undead, who both gained a lot of attention quickly, still managed, at the end of the day, to be pretty forgettable and pathetic. The same goes for Dressed Up As Life. While listening to “All the Same”, the first thing that came to mind was, “Is this 2001 all over again?” Basically, that is what you end up thinking over and over again as this disc stumbles on. What really takes the cake on this album is the song “Asshole Father”. The lyrics are as cheesy as they come and they make for a pretty good laugh.
At the end of the day, “All the Same” will probably be a hit with most newcomers, but once you get a full taste of what the Sick Puppies have to offer, you’ll be wishing you never heard it in the first place.
