About once a year an album really reaches out of the sterio and grabs me. Last year it was Brand New's "Deja Etendu." I'm not sure what it was about it, but it made for really compelling listening. This year's "reach out and grab you by the balls" record is Say Anything's ...Is A Real Boy.

Say Anything is an interesting band. Its hard to pigeon hole them into an genre. Some songs are straight up punk, others hard rock, running the gammit all the way to Motion City Soundtrack-esqu Moog hymn to the classic old western saloon style piano song.

The disc starts off with the ever changing tune "Belt." It starts off punk, moves to a pop chorus then changes again into the the final gang vocal sing-a-long of "What say you and all your friends step up to my friends in the alley tonight." This song is a microcosm of the entire disc. Each song changes, morphs, grows, soars and then nose dives back to the ground wrapping up each song into a perfect sonic mix.

The music alone would make this record at least a 3.5 on the rating scale, but the lyrics push it over the top. Say Anything has the rare ability to talk to you through their lyrics. They don't try to be poets, but rather engages you in a conversation about their lives, which turns out to be very much like mine. They talk about not selling out, wishing pain on an ex, having sex in public places, about the dangers of doing nothing with your life, saying 'fuck you' to the critics and scensters.

The diversity and lyrical depth of this record makes it a must have in my book. Doghouse records, which brought the mainstream The All American Rejects has another hit on their hands, and with the right amount of TLC, Say Anything can be not only a critical success, but will have the kids flocking to their shows. This is one of, if not THE best release of the year.
