Let’s be honest, Saosin’s latest effort, In Search of Solid Ground, was anything but solid, and because of its flopping Capitol Records dropped them like John Mayer drops famous blondes. The pattern is likely to repeat itself shortly with Runner Runner, who were picked up by Capitol and will be releasing their travesty of a debut album in a little under a month... which will be followed by their subsequent dismissal from Capitol's roster.
I’m going to come right out and sacrifice my few scattered shreds of professional integrity: I could not finish this album. I listened to the first few tracks in my car. My windows were down, the speed limit was irrelevant, my volume dial near-deafening—the conditions were perfect to enjoy just about anything. It was just my discerning ear and Runner Runner’s Runner Runner that ruined the mood. Instead of triumphant, catchy hooks trumpeting from my stereo, blistering the euphoria receptors of my brain, six tracks anemically dribbled and puttered out of my speakers before I shut it off and drove home, awe-struck, in silence.
You’ve heard this album before. Trust me. You may not think so, but if you were to take all of the discarded scraps and C-sides bands like Cartel, All Time Low and Anberlin left on their studio floors and collect them into a pile of reeking mediocrity, you’d have a white board titled “ideas” in Runner Runner’s practice space. At their essence, Runner Runner is unoriginal pop rock at its most unoriginal.
The band’s needlessly wordy biography promises “one mighty sound” and “skillful songwriting and musicianship, punk-infused intensity and humongous pop hooks.” Let me revise and condense their biography using my finely tuned editor’s skills: “One day five dudes from SoCal decided that getting chicks to sleep with them was too difficult and formed a pop rock band. Combining hackneyed, trite songwriting, uninspired musicianship, a complete and total lack of intensity, and medium-to-below-average-sized pop hooks, they were major label darlings almost overnight. They only needed a name as redundant as their music; thus, Runner Runner was born. This is one mighty awful sound. Prepare to never hear about them six months from now.”

I'm... slightly bummed that I seem to share the same hairstyle at the lead singer. Need haircut.

The music video seems to encapsulate one of their shows perfectly.

I sort of feel bad, used to kinda know these dudes when Over It was on Warped 2004. Made better friends with Seth than the other dudes, but he's not in RR so I don't feel as bad.

I'm listening to "So Obvious" to see what you were talking about
This is so bland
It's the melody that's the problem
And the words
They are using 5 notes for the whooooole tune

I just felt the album was lackluster. The single is catchy, but that's about it. Just felt like the album was rushed or something.

This is really terrible. The autotune on the vocals is like kicking someone in the nuts after you've already shot them in the stomach and stolen their wife and children.

this band shares members with Over It? if that's the case, why do they suck so horribly? over it was fucking rad.

So if these songs sound like b-sides (or c-sides) from "better" pop punk bands, what actually makes those pop punk bands any good?

You hate pop punk. I couldn't adequately explain that to you even if I wanted to. :P
