Hey, sometimes you just need a break from all the loud ruckus. Sometimes, you just need an acoustic guitar and some good ‘ol time music. Sometimes, hardcore just gets too tiring. The fellas in Roy sure feel that way sometimes, which is exactly why Roy exists.
Including former and current members of These Arms Are Snakes, Botch, and Harkonen, Roy has returned with another LP full of blue-collar rock tunes on Roy Killed John Train. Through this release, the members of Roy effectively balance out their brutally heavy side with
Officially, this is Roy’s fifth release, but only their second LP, and like every other release in Roy’s catalogue, Roy Killed John Train stands apart from the band’s preceding releases. Keeping things fresh, Roy decided on a mellower, acoustic, and melodically driven album this time around. Opening track “Reno, I’m Coming Home” is an example of this transition and is done so successfully. Other standout tracks like “In My Defense,” “The Middle Son,” and “Hotel Congress” keep the pace of the album alive and steady, without departing the laid-back tone that the rest of the album sets.
Every album has flaws, and Roy Killed John Train is no different. While this is a great album to take camping, to enjoy after a long day, or to spin post-party with a few friends, it doesn’t break any new ground. Roy Killed John Train would probably win an award for best background music because it is a great album, but a majority of the time it won’t stop you from what you’re doing just to listen to it.
Roy releases another solid album that neither wows nor sickens in Roy Killed John Train. Sometimes, you just need one of those albums.
