In the new millennium, rock and roll has become a watered down version of what the greats such as Led Zeppelin, Thin Lizzy and CCR so effortlessly paved into the road of music success. Blood, sweat, tears and the steady flow of booze and drugs made what we now consider classic rock timeless. As of late, groups of bell-bottom jeaned, long haired lovers of yesterday’s music have been forging together their attempts of recreating a time of melody that seems to have been forgotten. Some are looked at as a joke and fail miserably. Others soar high above their efforts and are smiled upon by the rock gods for their modern day tributes. One band in particular is making tidal waves in said watered down rock scene. Who may this be? LA’s own Rival Sons.

Rival Sons have only been around since 2008, but their ability to write ageless music is beyond amazing. When you listen to a band, you don’t always get all of what you paid for. Sometimes the drummer is just mediocre or other times the bassist is basically just filler. Well, not with Rival Sons. These four gentlemen have released their second full-length album, Pressure and Time, and on it you will notice that every member pulls their weight… and it’s with great force that they do so. The first member that will stand out to you is vocalist Jay Buchanan. This man has golden vocal chords laced with the finest whiskey. One of his finest exhibits is the title track, "Pressure and Time." The range of vocal capability Buchanan displays is immense. Also demonstrating some of his finest skills on this particular track is bassist Michael Miley. Mr. Miley is definitely no filler bassist and his tone and finger styling on this four string instrument is quite evident not just on this track, but throughout the whole album.

This album has everything you could ask for. The track “Burn Down Los Angeles” gives you the rock-anthem feel you need to get your blood pumping and beer flowing. “Only One” is a slowed down, groovy ensemble that oozes sex and is definitely the appropriate track to throw on for your special lady friend. How about some fuzzed-out stoner riffs with your rock? Yeah? Well then listen to “White Noise” because just when you think you’ve heard all that Rival Sons can dish out, they release a fury of distorted riffs and pounding beats that will make you want Stone Cold Steve Austin to bring you some beers and run around your backyard waving an American flag. However, it’s the concluding track “Face of Light” that will get you double fisting a beer and Zippo while throwing both in the air in the name of Rock ‘n’ Roll! It’s the perfect song for some end of the night chumminess with the boys.

If Jimmy Page made it with a bottle of Jack Daniels and they had a mythical Rock and Roll Whiskey Baby, it would be named Rival Sons. Sounds amazing right? Well it is. There is one setback for these guys, however, and that is there isn’t much of a market for real music anymore. So let’s hope for their sake and ours, they’re noticed and pushed hard. Because Rival Sons have just released a staple rock album for our generation and it needs to be etched into the history books written by the rock gods.

I've been meaning to get this one for a while. Love this kind of music. You are right, there isn't a market for real music anymore, but those of us lucky enough to seek it out can enjoy it, there are a lot of bands doing this that I really enjoy (Dirty Sweet, Year Long Disaster, The Parlor Mob, Antler, The Virginmarys, Graveyard, etc) People can say what they want, classic rock is never going to die, like most of the stuff on the scene today. I can tell you without listening to this that I am going to like it.

These guys are okay.. But Led Zeppelin, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Thin Lizz, they are not. Nor will they ever be. I really like that "Save Me" track. I think my least favorite part was that dudes voice. It's pretty generic and bad.

Hyperbole ain't got nothin' on Bill. These boys do what they do well, but it's been done before and they don't do it well enough.

No one said that they are as good as those bands you goon. They play music in the vein of those bands. And Powell you're right... exaggeration is a key when you write sometimes though. Bands have done this after this time of music was around but not many of them have managed to produce a sound that sounds as pure and raw like RS have. This album was recorded live, no ultra-production... I don't see that comparison in Jet or whatever other current bands you want to throw my way.

In no way shape or form am I saying these guys reinvented the wheel or are saving rock, I'm just saying that in a time where a lot of bands are watered down and wannabe rock stars, these guys play real rock 'n' roll in the new millennium and they sound damn good doing it.

Well I listened and did enjoy for an early Friday morning (6:00am). Not going to be in the albums of the year by any means, but good. The way you put it in your last comment, Bill, hit the nail on the head. A comparison that comes to my mind is Wolfmother, although I got pretty annoyed with that band. Really annoyed...

Sandy, I know I'm not Bill, but:
1. That new Foo Fighters was the most rockingly consistent thing they have put out in a really long time. The last time it seems like they put together an album that fit that well was There is Nothing Left to Lose, but of course, that was also probably their most mellow album (not counting the acoustic 2nd disc from In Your Honor). Anyway, I liked it a lot, and I haven't enjoyed one of their albums that much in a while.
2. Dude, thank you for sending Brad Wing over here. That guy kicked the hell out of the ball for us last week.

The Foo Fighters are radio bullshit rock. Such boring, basic, watered own, generic, bad taste in my mouth music. They have a small handful of semi catchy sing alongs, that with a year passed can be easily forgotten.

Considering this is not a thread to discuss the Foo... I will say YALL ARE FUCKIN IDIOTS! No band you listen to will ever reach the caliber of the Foo. Really? Radio bullshit rock? Have you even listened to the fuckin band besides what you HAVE heard on the radio. You just sound ignorant really. Like you're talking about Nickelback or Hinder. YOU MY FRIEND, can easily be forgotten in a year passed. Dave Grohl can fart and I'd rather listen to that than ever hear you utter a word.

Yeah, siding with Bill on that one. They're fucking incredible... and while Wasting Light is killer, In Your Honor was one of the best of the decade.

Unfortunately I don't care enough about Rival Sons to bring the focus of this thread back on them. Hmm.

All you gotta do is talk smack about a trash band and Bill gets pissed. The Foo Fighters aren't saying anything though. The music might shine for a few tracks here and there but there's nothing being said and the progression fell flat years ago. Riding the dead wings of Kurt Cobain seemed to give them a little spot light for a while and the rest was on the boring fact that they can write a four bar formula.

go watch the documentary "back and forth" about the foo fighters if you really think they're just another bullshit radio rock band.  the foo fighters can make better music than most of the other shit on the radio.  hell i could listen to songs like "best of you" more than "IF TERDAY WAS YER LAST DAY".

I'm not saying The Foo Fighters haven't put in the time, have put out a lot of top selling records, made a bunch of radio hits, or anything about them not being hard working guys. I just think they suck. There's maybe a handful of catchy bullshit songs that a bunch of Bill Lohr's like when bro dancing at some festival out in Hick shit, PA. That's cool, there's a bit of everything for everyone. But I have no need for this crap in my life.
