The music community of Southern California seems to be shifting from the aging rock stars of yesteryear to the experimental capital of the United States. The Locust’s relevant side projects and labelmates have been in the area for years, along with bands like Hella who are just beginning to get the attention they deserve. Enter Qui who, similarly to Hella, recently added a vocalist. As was the case with Hella, the addition of a vocalist has only benefited an already phenomenal band.
Guitarist Matt Cronk and drummer Paul Christensen have been playing together as Qui since 2000 and their dynamic is nothing short of incredible, as odd time signatures and often-bizarre sounds connect perfectly from one instrument to the next. The new addition, vocalist David Yow of The Jesus Lizard, does not cause the Qui signature sound to compromise itself in the least. Instead, he joins in on the wild combination of punk, noise, hardcore, metal, succeeding in creating a cohesive unit in its first incarnation.
Qui has created a phenomenal record that will cause you to run the gamut of musical emotions and the scary part seems to be that they have just hit their stride. Every aspect of this band is firing on all cylinders, all completely on the same page, and yet extremely experimental. If Qui never achieves the fame they deserve, don’t be surprised if they’re a band that is remembered as being far ahead of their time.
