Marrying emo sentiments with electronica beats may once have been groundbreaking, not least in a genre as a stale as ‘emo’, but with Panic! At The Disco and Hellogoodbye enjoying mainstream success, this ‘fresh’ take on the genre may well be viewed as a bandwagon jumping for late arrivals.
PlayRadioPlay!, a.k.a Dan Hunter is, in a sense, a late arriver. His brand of heartfelt emo-pop mixed with Postal Service-lite 16 bit electronica is indeed nothing mind-blowing. However, it would be truly surprising if Hunter’s efforts were to amount to something on this level.
Now, what is most apparent on The Transmission EP is his talent at genuinely conveying emotions; be it through his fragile vocals or knowledgeable way around a sequencer. To some his lyrics may be overly affectionate, possibly borderline mushy, but frankly this type of music isn’t aimed at the types who would react this way. When you’ve found that special someone, when you “complement each other like colours”, when “even fairytale characters would be jealous” you feel like telling the world, and Hunter does just that in an unabashed and quite lovely manner.
It is unclear if big things are on the horizon for PlayRadioPlay!, however. The majority of the tracks here have been available on the internet before its release, and truthfully the cover of “Mr Brightside” edges on shameless. But for those times when you’re loved up to the eyeballs or lamenting lost loves, Dan Hunter might just have the song for you.
