If you were stranded on a dessert island and all you could listen to was one artist for the rest of your life, you might want to consider Mike Patton’s discography. Included you’d get Faith No More, Fantômas, Mr. Bungle, and Tomahawk, along with his endless collaborations with other musicians. Now, after nearly six years of preparation, Patton has returned with his most accessible release since Faith No More with Peeping Tom.
This eponymous debut showcases Patton’s brilliant ability to combine his eccentric, spastic genius with his respect for pop music, resulting in a masterful collection of trip-hop, hip-hop, pop, and alternative songs. In short, it’s another unique addition to the already extensive Patton library.
On Peeping Tom, Patton recruited an eclectic group of musicians to help bring the album to life – an awing list that includes Rahzel, Dan the Automator, Jel, Kid Koala, Kool Keith, Massive Attack, Odd Nosdom, and even Norah Jones.
Opening with “Five Seconds,” Patton and Odd Nosdom start off with a supafly beat, before hitting a signature Patton freak-out chorus filled with absurd vocal noises and layers-upon-layers of keys, guitars, and synths. “Mojo” features Rahzel and Dan the Automator, and showcases more thick, frosty beats accentuated with eerie guitar and synth tracks – not unlike Massive Attack’s Mezzanine – revolving around a haunting, drug induced chorus. The following track, “Don’t Even Trip,” features Amon Tobin and some of Patton’s well-documented lyrical humor with a chorus like: “And I know that assholes grow on trees, but I’m here to trim the leaves, and I’m afraid you’re still my friend. You’re just a piece of shit, but I can overlook it today because you’re still my friend.” The Massive Attack featured “Kill the DJ” is one of the album’s most productive tracks. While Patton follows similar Massive Attack structures throughout Peeping Tom, he still makes the songs his own; however, with Massive Attack featured on “Kill the DJ,” listeners will appreciate the band’s inclusion on the album. In fact, Patton should just join Massive Attack.
None of Peeping Tom’s tracks are weak or fledgling. Patton once again proves that he is relevant and original, and although the album will most likely be overlooked by a majority of audiences, Peeping Tom is still one of the year’s most entertaining, original, and accessible albums. If you’re stranded on a desert island, Peeping Tom is a great addition to the Patton collection, and would certainly make your days more enjoyable.

have not. i have barely delved into what zorn material i have on this beastly computer of mine, let alone his more recent offerings.
anyway, tomahawk BLOWS. i said it. and all three bungle albums are amazing. fantomas is probably my second-favorite "full-time" patton band.
